The other car my dad owned after the Elantra was a c250 turbodiesel merc. Another 400k km on that car before he sold it. Sadly his eyesight went and the car was just standing or else it would have been driven more. That car did alot of long distance though.
Was it a W202? My dad had one as well, also the C250 Turbodiesel variant. The non-turbo variants are hugely popular as taxi's in some African countries due to their reliability and durability, as well as their frugality. They are dog slow, though, but that matters not when you are aiming for good economy.

Yes that's the one. It never gave any issues at all. That was the only car that I've ever seen needing only services, brakes and tyres. He got the car with around 60k and took it beyond 400k with nothing breaking at all.
Fuel economy was amazing as well. We went on many road trips and I used to drive that one quite often and lived it. When he sold the car I wanted to buy it but he sold it to a friend for of his who really needed a vehicle and couldn't afford to buy something decent. Guy got a great deal as my dad sold it for next to nothing.

My dad had one of those and the 1.6 Elantra. I remember he used to say the xs meant xtra s**t because it wasn't as nice as the Elantra to drive. Funny enough the accent out lived the elantra which supports your experience. From back then I do remember the only issue was lack of good mechanics to maintain the Hyundai's (well at least in CPT)
Surely the difference is in ride quality and noise levels? To me at least

Man, that is an awesome story. I was still too young to drive when my dad sold his, but I remember my favourite button being the one on the dash that makes the rear headrests fall down into the parcel shelf area
