We now know it hurts growing kids.

That doesn't mean it doesn't hurt adults too.

Re boom and booze: Which would you prefer to see in the pilot's hand as your Airbus A380 comes in to land - a glass of scotch or a reefer?

Based on how people drive on either I would say I would prefer a stoner. A stoner knows they are stoned and they tend to drive more slowly and carefully with a healthy dose of paranoia. Drunkards think theyre Michael Schumacker after a couple of drinks and never think they are as drunk as they really are and rather than been paranoid they tend to be more arrogant. So I would choose stoner every single time.

It was to imply that it doesnt matter if its naturally grown or cooked in a lab. Thats not the defining feature of the word. Its an obvious jest? Really, would like to see him say that :)

In all seriousness I don't think it being a drug is really relevant although I suppose pointing it out was inevitable.

There are so many misused household substances that can and do far more harm than cannabis ever would freely available.
Chances are that you have at least one of them inside your house right now.

Add to that all the "legal" pharmaceutical substances that are abused planet wide as well as all the alternatives that have come directly from prohibition and one realises that the "harm" done by cannabis is completely insignificant.

Significant harm comes from prohibition, not use.

Depends on my schedule.

True.

It's a separate point I know, but the State has no business banning stuff. (and yes, ghoti, even fissionable/radioactive material or the botulin virus. Criminals by definition disobey the law, so the laws don't stop 'em anyway.)

No. That's really stoopid.

There is no argument with criminals. Catch them. Convict. Compel to make good the harm they caused others. For serious crimes, so these plus remove them from society.

How old? Over 16?

We already allow Depo-Provera for 12 year olds.

The authors review literature showing that marijuana impairs driving, increasing the risk of being involved in a car accident...

I'd be interested to read this part of the review. They don't really mention what literature they reviewed, unfortunately you need to pay to access the full study.

Early teens shouldn't be smoking anything anyway.

I got stoned everyday from the age of 16 till after school. We had some serious family problems back then and getting stoned was my only escape. If I didn't have weed to occupy my time I would have probably done something much worse.

So it can't be all bad.

So what? That doesnt make it any less a drug.

Not all cannabis meets the criteria for being a drug, so the plant itself cannot be considered a drug overall.
Most cannabis grown in the world is not psychoactive.

Also, food meets the definition you gave of being a 'substance which has a physiological effect when ingested' yet I'm sure you don't consider food to be a drug.

Personally im more worried about these 30-40% THC varieties that are being developed naturally by selective crossbreeding.
