Hoswit all, I need assistance please.
I currently game on a Lenovo Legion Y540 (work and play) 15 inch notebook. Its a decent entry level piece of kit that runs most games.
Now, im looking at purchasing a 144Hz monitor to use on a rig that i'll build at a later stage.
The specs of my notebook are as follows:
Y540-15IRH-PGO
Core i5 9300H @ 2.40 Ghz
8 GB ram
GTX 1650
4 GB V ram.
60 Hz display

The question I have is, with the specs given, is it possible to utilize the 144Hz from the external display with my notebook (i have no idea what HDMI port i have) or will I be stuck playing at 60hz?

Like I said, the idea is that I will have a rig at a later stage, so im thinking that having a monitor already purchased and be able to use it in the interim is a start?

120Hz is the limit for HDMI 1.4 (open to correction), so unless you have HDMI 2.0 and compatible cable, you're already limited (to 120). If you have DisplayPort, that's way better, so you should use that instead.

I think the problem you'll have is that depending on whatever game you're playing and the resolution you're playing at, I don't think you'll hit those frames numbers consistently with that mobile GPU.

Unless you're willing to lower graphics settings or play at lower resolutions, it'll just be a marginal amount more than 60 (due to the GPU not keeping up).

You could turn off *sync, but then you'll encounter tearing obviously.

Thank you for the clarification. I think i'll stick to buying a monitor and be content with playing at 60 Hz. I've been ok thus far while playing. Added bonus of already having a screen when the rig is ready.
