I am looking to have administrative control over my home network. Is there a free software that you could recommend?

I'd like to monitor, control, allocate bandwidth usage per device.

I am using a basic Huawei B315 router for my home network.

There is nothing free that will help you unfortunately.

Perhaps start off by replacing the router with one that has some basic monitoring and control freatures

Hi Mongeasy,

Not sure how good your networking knowledge are. But you can have a look at the mikrotik RB951Ui-2nd. Router. But you can setup some mangle rules with quees on their to allocated bandwidth to certain users or IPs

I have around 45 Mikrotik routerboards on site at different customers and can monitor each site with The dude server and SNMP.

RB951Ui-2nd is very old, and shouldn't be purchased anymore, plus to run "the dude" you are better off getting something like a RB750 Gr3 or a HEX S rather.

You can also try an Asus Router running AsusWrt-Merlin firmware. Will do all you want and more.

Entry level router is a RT-AC68U https://www.loot.co.za/product/asus-rt-ac68u-dual-band-wireless-ac1900-gigabit-router/ndmb-3050-g910

Download the Merlin firmware from https://www.asuswrt-merlin.net/

Essential links - SNB Forum - https://www.snbforums.com/forums/asuswrt-merlin.42/

I would suggest enable SSH and install the AMTM, Connmon, SCMerlin and Skynet packages. I use the Skynet firewall package to block countries (North Korea and China).

Ouch R3000 Asus Entry Level ??

Check this out on takealot.com, https://www.takealot.com/mikrotik-hap-lite-soho-2ghz-wifi-router-rb941-2nd/PLID46625509

Would this be an option? Not too worried about Gigabit Ethernet..

That should be fine. Have a friend with 100Mb/s fibre and they received one of those.

You could always use that for routing, switch off the wifi, and link up and use whatever you currently have for Wifi signal if it has better signal.

You dont need to do anything fancy, I have a RB750Gr3 and set up simple queues to manage my bandwidth. If you go this route make sure fasttrack (hardware routing) is turned off under firewall settings (IIRC) otherwise the queues wont work. Took me a while to find that. Most consumer routers also have "bandwidth management" to do that as well though.

Sophos UTM - easy peasy - beats everything else and free for home use up to 50 devices.
