me too.

It would be nice to ask for a product and not get a blank stare. Also, it would be nice if a person-with-authority was available to offer a discount etc. Yesterday I went to a few shops to buy some memory. The second place to have the memory was more expensive, and when I queried this, I got the usual "oh, that is the price we get it for" nonsense - whatever happened to a shop offering to meet (or better) the price? Would have saved me a trip back to the first store, and they would have made a sale.

PC shops are nothing more than cattle-runs patrolled by wanna-be (but never gonna-be) kids.

i may get flamed here .. but what the hell ...

try out pc game world ... their prices are a bit high but you can negotiate cos the sales team works on individual mark-ups .... what I like about buying there is their 3 month upgrade ("am i stuck with it policy") ... bought a graphics card there and exchanged it three months later for a better one ....

as in all things in life ... you get for what u pay .... you must be willing to pay a bit more for service .... i personally prefer buying from a brick and mortar shop rather than online ....

also try computersonly in kyalami ... cool bunch of blokes ... dont push you for a sale. .... not big shop but someplace where u can have a chat with the techie and sales guy for advice on what you buying ... retail prices are fair .....

regards

Have you tried some Incredible Ripoffs (Most major malls have one), or Computer Warehouse? AFAIK, there ARE NO GOOD/BIG SHOPS! Save yourself the hassle, make your own coffee and buy online!

PS: Want a good store, then go oversees! Thailand has a 6 storey "computers only" shopping mall in Bangkok, one of the biggest in the world! In fact, a lawyer told me (when I was there), he actually flew to Thailand, had a holiday and bought a laptop that's 2-3 months ahead of anything available in SA (except of course if you import yourself) and flew back to SA for less money than what it would cost in SA (around R20K-R30K)! Sounds like a "fly to Hong Kong to download" scenario!

A pc shop almost like the new Vodacom centre in JHB? just with way better service I wonder if customers would actually fall for this?

you listed all my main reasons for shopping there (and punting them from time to time ;)) I tend to use PCGW in Menlyn more for consumables like cables, media, game controllers (to me thats consumables :), etc) For main hardware I always make the trip to Kyalami

Three words: waiting for delivery...................

LOL fair enough....I guess I relate drinking coffee and shopping to a book store ala Exclusive Books or Borders/Barnes & Noble (USA) not really to a computer shop, but who knows, with the amount of cash people are dishing out on hardware, it maybe a good idea?

I like supporting a brick & mortar establishment if they are able to provide knowledgeable, OBJECTIVE, friendly service at a reasonable price. I do not expect to pay less at a shop compared to online shopping as their overhead structures are very different.

Brick & Mortar establishments where I have had success (check the websites for contact details):

PC International - www.pcint.co.za
NakedIT - www.nakedit.co.za
PC Game World - www.pcgameworld.co.za
BTgames - www.btgames.co.za
Cyberdyne - www.cyberdyne.co.za

I am sure there are tons more out there, but these are places where I have had first hand experience.
