seeing as this is a clued up thread, does anyone know whether any of the anime-raw releases have nihongo subs? really keen to work out some sort of double-subbing system to practice my kanji reading while brushing up on missed shows. There are a lot of bdrips on http://nyaa.se but haven't found one like that yet... will just have to buy? :crying:

You mean subs in Japanese for a Japanese show? Reading translated Manga/Light Novels side by side with the originals will be more effective, just be aware translated material may be heavily localized.

See here: http://kitsunekko.net/dirlist.php?dir=subtitles/japanese/

They've got Japanese subtitles for a lot of mainstream anime, even ones that are still airing. Turn off the English subs then load these files to get Japanese subs. I'm sure there are many other sites like this as well.

I'd recommend only doing this for listening though, then you can look up words you don't know from the subtitles. For reading I'd recommend easy raw manga or this site. It's a news website with very easy to read Japanese and is great for practising.

It's also "proper" Japanese so you don't have to be on the lookout for slang, rude/strange ways of talking and deliberately miss-used kanji like you do when reading manga.

EDIT:

An even easier site great for reading:

I was having an interesting discussion on twitter last night on what anime to chose when you want to get a friend into the whole scene.

I ruled out Death Note, for one reason, every time someone starts off with Death Note they assume that all anime's will be heart clenching from start to end. Steins; Gate is one of my new favourites, but it really takes time to kick off into the meat of things. Most people ended up siding with Samurai Champloo, Evangelion & Attack of Titan.

So I'd like to know, what are your go to animes when you want to introduce a friend to the scene?
One of the criteria's I put when asking people this question is that it has to be a short run anime. Anything above 40 episodes is really pushing it.

Hmm.. Good question. Under 40 episodes..

Clannad
Fate Stay Night
Gundam 00
Nurarihyon
Kimi ni Todoke
Usagi Drop
Ergo Proxy
Attack of the Titan

Dependent on their interests I'd start from the above list. If you extend the episodes a little more.. Full Metal Alchemist is excellent for any type of viewer and because the first half is dubbed they'll be too invested to stop when it switches to subtitles :D

Gundam and DBZ being where I started.
Evangelion works too but they need to be a little more into sci-fi more so then other animes in my opinion.

Well 50-60 episodes is still fine.
