Hi there
I am currently waiting for Telkom to install a new ADSL service for me, however this is already dogged by network problem and such. Due to my work I need a permanently on DEPENDABLE service.
I have looked at both Vodacom as well as MTN as my primary supplier and in both cases the dependability is an issue. (Just a note, at the moment MTN is the more dependable one...) Thus I have now ordered the Telkom connection and they are in the process of installing it.
What I now need aditionally is a backup service that I can use from a laptop or if the Telkom one goes down. I currently have a Vodaphone datacard with an adapter that I plug into my PC. In this I use a MTN pay-as-you-go sim. However I have found that the datacard gives me problems. If I connect but no traffic travels for 20mins or so, the connection goes down, however when I then try to reconnect I get an error 'Port still in use'. I then have to reboot my PC to get it up again. I have also gotten the message 'SIM not Ready' from the Vodacom dashboard on occasion. I assume that this is due to some incompatibility between the Vodaphone data-card/software and the MTN sim. (I do not get this problem when I use a Vodacom SIM.) Is anybody else having the same problem and will it be solved by using MTN hardware and software?
I am looking at buying a Huwai USB modem or a F@stLink E220 HSDPA Modem. What is the typical price of these and are they dependable? I see the F@stlink is MTN branded. Will I have the same problems Im having now if I use it with a Vodacom SIM?
Then the last question (and this will probably be the decider). I see elsewhere in this forum that the MTN HSDPA connection is/was capped at 64kbps. I need this service to Skype to clients in the UK. Has this cap been restored to the 256kbps its supposed to be, or is it still capped at 64kbps?
Thanks in advance
