@The_Traveller your expertise are needed here.
I try to refrain from these threads cos you know the usual culprits (muppets) who will come in and talk k@k.
Now we're mostly concerned about the visa part:
Does the job you do or income you make affect the outcome of the application or is the funds in your account the most important thing?
Yes to both (for a lot of countries) , you need to prove you have the wealth and will be returning to this craphole.

wait, OP gambled, lost money and is fleeing the country?

lmao

Edit: I've never actually been to like a casino or a stripclub. I've played some card games n stuff in video games.

But gambling is not my thing

I have gotten a schengen visa before. They will want to see your return ticket and date. They also look at your finances to see if you have enough money for the duration of your stay. They also want a letter from your employer when you returning to work.

Well that was what was required for my application.

If you struggling with money Europe is not the best idea IMO

You can go to Istanbul "visa free" (apply online). It's cheap and there's a hell of a lot to see and do. One of the best destinations I've been to and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg.

Also Thailand is very cheap and visa free and you can have a city holiday and a beach holiday in the same country (local flights are cheap).
The whole Europe thing isn't set in stone. We'll probably compile a list of different destinations that fit our budget and enable us to get the most out of it. I'll add Instanbul to the list.

Not cheap anymore, unfortunately. Most prices are on par or even more expensive than SA now. You could live off cheap street food, but rice and noodle dishes day in and day out are just not for me.

Make sure your passport photo matches your face! Going through Frankfurt the dude next to me (late twenties) told the official he was coming from SA, stopping one night in FRA before leaving again for another African country, claimed he only spoke French and no English. Was asked why his photo didn't match his face... eventually four Germans pitched up to help him on his way ..and probably not where he thought he was going .. lol.

Always have a magnifying glass on hand! .. once going through a small borderpost between Russia and far northern Norway on my way to Murmansk, I spent an hour trying to read the form as the fine print was too small. Also didn't help that they didn't speak English and had never seen a SA passport before.

Don't carry more than 3 data cards for a camera ... colleague going through the North Korean border with me was interrogated as they thought he was a journalist or some other nefarious character since why would you need to store so much data?

One thing to bear in mind is that even if a country does not require a visa for South African citizens, it doesn't mean that you won't get a grilling on arrival at the airport. If anything, the visa-free countries give you more of a hard time on arrival than a country that does require a visa.
