I'm going to the Kruger National park at the end of the month.
Anyone have any tips on accommodation, what to do etc?

Never been there before.

Good luck it's very boring....

Oh do not speed they do not like it.
If you like camping it's much cheaper... and the restaurants give the worst food and service.

What?

I've lived near the Kruger Park for almost 14 years of my life and I've never experienced what you have.

Seriously. If you want to be a troll at a restaurant, then you will be treated as one.

Alf, it depends what your budget is to be honest.

There are a lot of tourist centers in and around the Kruger Park.

You've got a few choices. The camps in the park which are affordable is mostly Pretoriuskop, Skukuza and possibly Bergendal.

The thing about the Park is, if you stay in and around the lower areas, closer to Hazyview (Phabeni Gate and further Kruger Gate) & Numbi gate, towards Pretoriuskop you can travel in and around those areas in at least a day and get to see lots of things.

You get maps as you enter the Park, but a good idea would be to buy a decent Kruger Park Map from CNA or similar.

There's a few attractions around here. Let's say you visit those areas I mentioned, you can easily head towards Sabie/Graskop/Pilgrims Rest one morning from Hazyview and just drive around and see God's Window, eat some pancakes in Graskop and possibly go on the big swing, which is a large canyon with a rope as you enter Graskop.

Hazyview also has this:
http://www.skywaytrails.com/

I haven't been down skyway, only found it over the weekend on Google, but I know exactly where it is. It's on the Hazyview to Sabie road,

Get a map, get some refreshments and chill out.

On your way back to JHB or CT or whatever, head over to Nelspruit and have a look at the Riverside Mall, for a flick or some munch. A great restaurant in Nelspruit is Cicada as well near the Sonpark Center in town. The food is really amazing, small place, not extremely upperclass, but it's truly great food and I had fun there day before yesterday.

Anyway, there's lots to do here and don't let people turn you off from visiting, make it fun for yourself and speak to many folks about where to stay and what to do.

Go to Skukuza and feed the hyenas :D

Also go check out the little museum.

Go have breakfast at sabi or at olifants camp.

Oooo and if you have the money go on a night-drive.

I don't have a budget yet, driving up from Cape Town.
Was hoping it would be under R1000 per day for accommodation, food etc.

Easily ;)

Just phone around and ask. I know there's small chalets in Pretoriuskop starting at R180 a night.

Just don't tell them your budget is R1k :p

Will do.
Reckon it will be a good idea to get a map then.
I went to a few websites and tried to find accommodation, but there's just so many of them...

Thought about the camping thing, but I don't really like scorpions much.

Why thank you sir!!

I lived in Nelspriut and Palagat..... my brother is also a ranger in the park.
I think it's over priced and even when we stayed in the private camps the service sucked.

I just do not like it. Maybe its because we did it to death......

LOLZ!!! Good luck at finding a spot it's busy this time of year but you get lucky with people canceling.

As for camping i have been all over i liked the Bird hide at Mopani the best but that is very high up North.

Sleeping in the bird hide was fun besides the longdrop:sick: But there is no electricity and you can hear the animals move around the hide. Must say that was one of the better times i had there:D

Like everything else in life its not everyones cup of tea.

Ps Alf yes you may hunt your own food, provided its with a wooden (self made) spear or a slingshot.

The elephant is great this time of year. Also a giraffe or lion potjie is not to bad.

Past December on holiday, I stayed at the Ngwenya Lodge at Komatipoort. Went through to the Kruger Park via the Crocodile Bridge Gate. Was the second time that I had visited the park and was quite good. You have to be very patient while driving around and have you passengers looking on either side of the vehicle.

Another tip is to go to the Rest Camps and find a notice board which people/park rangers post sightings of the Big 5 which can be quite usefull.

Hope this helps mate!

Cheers

Had a look at some pics of God's window, and that alone will make the trip worthwhile. :)
