Hi everyone

I want to buy my first motorbike to save fuel costs/beat the traffic in JHB. Travelling on William Nicol in the morning is really becoming a pain (Takes me 40mins to an hour to get to work -_-). I'm budgeting for around R15000 - R20000, hopefully that is enough. Do any of you have good suggestions? I'm not looking for a tank, something around 250cc ought to be right?

I was looking at Big Boy, but i'm not sure how reliable they are (Their prices seem good), the Honda CBR is also looking good. Any suggestions, hints and tips for driving would also greatly help.

Don't buy a big boy. You will have problems. guaranteed. R20 000, you probably won't get a decent bike.

I will be looking at buying another bike too. Soon. I got a new job closer to home. I will be traveling 6km to work and I am looking at buying a new Honda MSX 125. Currently I am doing 50 Km to work and I am riding a KTM 690 SMC R.

The MSX 125 retails fro about R36 000. So for a proper 250 you will be looking at nothing less than R40000 if it is new or a demo

I can vouch for the Honda CBX 250. It is a fantastic bike for commuting. You should be able to find a second hand one for R20k hopefully (they are in high demand!). Very reliable and high quality product. DO NOT get a scooter. Just don't.

I'd far rather get a second hand Honda than a brand new Big Boy.

Depending on your needs, have you considered a scooter?

Im looking at getting a 2nd hand Yamaha BWS. You can definitely get a decent 2nd hand one for R20k, and they are practically indestructible.

Main reason I am considering a scooter over a bike is how easy it is to drive, no gears to worry about, specifically when wearing formal shoes.

The honda CBX 250 sounds like a good idea thanks. I'd prefer not getting a scooter as it's 25km commute, would like a bit more power for my route. What's the reason why people are against Big Boy? Do they break down often or what?

I've heard that scooters are for guys who like to feel the wind on their vaginas. Although I'd love to get an old Vespa one day. :)

They are built really badly, When you ride everything becomes undone. All your nuts and bolts will loosen. You will have constant oil leaks and mechanical problems. The bike will be in the workshop more than on the road.

Before you do, my daughter is a FA with Liberty, they have some very good policies with an excellent Funeral benefit attached. Get in touch.

Scooters are particularly dangerous. I had one as a student.

Tend to slip, skid or fall over on any wet, uneven surface, or gravel (those tiny wheels)
People don't seem to see you, or if they do, they assume you are travelling a low speed and then cut in front of you.
