Hi

I'm looking to buy a new laptop that I'll be using for software development next year when I go to go study, I am currently doing freelance coding for ABSA's new digital waypoint/indoor gps system and I found my previous machine (Dell Inspirion 2nd Gen i5, 4gb ram, 5400 rpm hdd) to hang a lot while working on this.

So I'm looking for a machine that is going to be ~5 years futureproof and that would be able to handle and run smoothly for this type of stuff that I'm currently working on.

I have been looking but haven't found anything solid yet, was hoping you guys could help out and maybe have some suggestions :), I'm not phased about it being OSX or a windows machine, screen size (not bigger than 16") etc but...

Must haves:
- Solid state hdd, atleast 256Gb.
- Backlit keyboard.
- At least 8Gb RAM 1600Mhz or better.
- At least 3 USB 3.0 ports.
- i5 haswell cpu or better.
- Intel Iris or/and Dedicated gpu.
- Solid battery life.

Would like it to have but doesn't have to:
- QHD screen or retina etc.
- Good build quality.
- HDMI out port.

I have a budget of around R25K.

Thanks :)

I personally have an alienware m17x and I can tell you that the build quality is solid.

Have you tried looking into MSI laptops? you should be able to find something within your budget.

Look at the HP Envy 17. It meets most of your requirements.

Haswell i7 4700MQ processor
16 GB RAM
2 x 1TB Drives
Backlit Keyboard
4 x USB 3 ports
1 x HDMI
DVD drive
Full HD screen (17 inches)

I have one and bought it from Incredible for 20K.
