Hi guys,

As the title suggests, I am looking to buy a new camera - to be used on my vacation this year.

I am looking for a sleek, compact and high quality camera that will be used during traveling, not for professional/enthusiast purposes.

Is the Canon PowerShot SX220 HS any good?

Any other suggestions? Budget is R4000.

Thanks for your time/input.

My girl friend just bought that camera for her trip to Thailand. We played around with it over the weekend and she is very happy with it. Good buy imo. Uses rechargeable batteries...

Thanks for your advise. However, I still need guidance on an appropriate model to purchase!

Go to their website and see what's on special.

Then google for reviews.

Alternatively go to Orhms like most other folk do.

They operate on commission, and thus, are inherently biased towards up-selling.

I was just joking... DP Review is your best site for reviews. When you find something you like, go try it in the shop.

What do you want to photograph? Does it need to be compact?

You can upgrade the firmware of the Canon bottom of the range to the same specs as the semi-professional range. Meaning better zoom and focus etc. Haven't tried it, but read up on it somewhere.

I for one would buy a ****ty R700 camera from Esquire and save the other money for a proper camera later.

I used to have a R3000 Sony, replaced it a month ago with a Nikon D90 (that is still on special @ ORMS) with a 18-55mm lens and 55-200mm lens, carry bag, 8GB Class10 SD for R7000. This bundle is insane value for money, not even the Makro special on the Canon 600D comes close to it and your pictures WILL look 10 times better.

You asked about a small camera, so this is probably worthless info to you. Sorry. :)

Nonetheless, I appreciate your insight and input.

I have sent someone to Makro to pickup the Canon PowerShot SX220 HS.
