Heh, maybe less hair as well as you try to put it all together.

Vanity aside, NO software - or woman - is worth losing your hair over. ;)

Mikroz,

Ubuntu is built in such a way as not to teach you the things you are looking to learn. It's aimed mostly at beginners who do not want to know what a linux command line looks like.
My suggestion to you is for you to get a better understanding of what linux is and how to work with it. Trying your hand at installing Gentoo Linux as a VM will do you wonders.
There website has step by step excellent documentation that teaches as you install, check it out and you will start to move around Ubuntu much more easily.

I'll add Gentoo to the To Do list. Thanks.

I'm not after a 100% DOS-like OS. I have neither the time nor the patience for that, but I would like to be fairly proficient and be free to turf Windows on demand.

Ubuntu is still on my machine, some weeks on. That's unusual for me, and must mean something. ;)

No machine under my control has lasted more than 5 minutes with Vista, and I'm resisting 7 with an alter boy's fear of priests. A righteous and strong one. ;)

Gentoo is kinda hardcore. I'd suggest ArchLinux as an intermediate step.
Ubuntu->Arch->Gentoo.

No need to immediate start with the compiling stuff by hand etc...

hey

Why not try Linux Mint, Mandriva powerpack 2010 or ubuntu studio .. Ubuntu or Linuxmint can install in windows as a exe. Then you have a dual-boot on your system with 2 OS, and if you are done with linux you can just go and uninstall it in windows....

Mandriva is more for the pro, it can do what ubuntu and linux mint can do and more, but installing is easy, but to run linux and windows need but of time.
Ubuntu studio is very coool. but it don't install like ubuntu do.. not so easy. but very nice to run as it use a Real-time Kernel.

On the game side. the only game that install is HON (http://www.heroesofnewerth.com/) and it is nice to play.

Linux is fast and no virus. but if you dont know it then linux owns you.

Your nick got me thinking immediately of Linspire (Lindows). ;)

I had to Wikipedia what a real-time kernel is. Interesting stuff indeed.

I'm not into my online games - not an issue.

Linux installed via an .exe in Windows? That's irony for you - but still rather neat. ;)
