Lotto machines offline as new operator falters

"New" operator. Wasn't Ithuba the very first operator/scratch card guys?

thuba took over the operation of the South African National Lottery on Monday. It had been a rub for the previous eight years by Gidani. In 2013, Gidani had been designated by the National Lotteries Board to be the preferred bidder, but Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies overturned this decision. Gidani is still challenging Davies’ decision in the courts.
 I was under the impression that the Lotto was suspended until the Gidani challenge was resolved, IIRC this was the case back when Gidani took over the licence.

I'm not surprised Ithuba are waiting for the outcome before rolling out terminals.

Not sure why people are surprised at the wobbles. TIA - the continent cannot even get paper-based voting to work stable.

So that's why it was offline... was wondering why.

Ag siestog, people be havening withdrawal symptoms. Betcha the cadres must be fuming.

Tata ma chance, tatta my geld... there's lots of easy money to make, expect the fight to turn ugly soon...

can imagine some guys get real hot under collar when the system doesnt work.
sometimes when i go to the cafe or counter at PnP, i see some people play lotto like a proffessional gambler.
they literally buy 100s of tickets at a time.
i guess even if only small % has 'some' winning combo on, they still make at least more than the cost.
and i've seen many times the guys who buy those many tickets, also get big payouts too... not sure if its really a good way to make money though
so the system not working is screwing with their livelyhood :)

Might've been Uthingo if memory serves

I remember "Ithuba scratch cards"

Yup, that it was.. until 2007 sometime...

Yes they were called Uthingo.

Ithuba was around before the national lottery came into existence and had the game show Spin and Win, scratch cards and Natal Lotto. Thereafter the national lottery came into existence and the natal lotto was canned. The national operators were Uthingo, and Gidani, and now Ithuba is back on the scene.

Well when FNB came out with the message saying that online purchase of lotto tickets will be suspended until further notice, you could sort of foresee this happening.

Intriguing.. if Ithuba had the Natal Lotto, then I'm instantly more interested in the national lottery again tbh.
