Low-cost curved LG CK50 smartphone coming to South Africa

Why is it curved? To buldge in my pocket? What makes a curved screen better than a flat one?

I don't get this curved business, TV's were curved then they became flat it just worked so much better... but then we curved them again? A flat screen can be mounted flush and looks sleek, devices can be thinner because circuit boards are flat. A curved one does nothing but take away the advantages of flat screens...

I dunno about phones, but your movie experience will greatly benefit from a slight curve on the tv screen.
You get almost no washout on the edges and you you experience more of the intended effect of the movie.
I am definitely not into gimmicks (like 3D) , but once you have watched a movie on a decent curved screen, you can never go back.

Will greatly benefit.... how?
intended effect... which is what?

Geez if your screen is so big that the edges become washed out due to viewing angles you need a better screen or your screen is massive and you're sitting too close to it nothing that a very slightly curved disply will fix.

Here's another reason why a curved display doesn't make sense for a home TV, In a house hold more than one person will be watching at a time, most of the time... The guy who sits dead centre will get a great view while the poor sod that sits on the couch to the side will get a terrible angle and view of that beautiful curved screen. Curved screens actually restrict optimal viewing angles more than flat ones... go figure. So again backwards.

For applications where 1 user sits very close to the screen like a PC or notebook for example a curved screen might be nice. Giving the user the feeling that the pictures wrap around them a little bit.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that 3D is less of a gimmick than the current curved displays. Atleast 3D does something

Watch a movie on a curved screen and you will see.

The intent of movies is to try immerse you in their message and overall experience.

My point was that for myself personally (and a lot of others who agree) in front of the tv, on the comfy couch, watching said movie, a curved screen offers a visually better and more involved viewing experience.

If you personally don't like curved screen technology, then that is fine. I dig it, but that's just me :)

Same goes for 3D. Some peeps rave and love it, but all it does for me is make me want to puke after 2 minutes.

4.5" curved displays simply aren't big enough for the effect to work.

What effect? You need cinema sizes for the effect to work, personal & home devices don't cut it at the moment

Saw someone on a clip pointing out the other day that similarly curved LG G Flex2 doesn't lend itself to typing / swype'ing if lay it flat down on a table, as the curve makes it unstable - I tend to agree, so feel this curvature business is a gimmick. If people don't buy, they'll stop making them.

Regarding curved TV's : click on the 18:20 to listen ; episode goes all the way back to 2013 ..

Scott is back to talk about the latest design trend in high level HDTVs - curved screens! Leo has an OLED screen that's curved and Sony just introduced a curved LCD screen. Scott says it's basically because they can make it and it stands out. It has some downsides including stretching out reflections, making them worse, and narrowing the field of view so that only one or two people can really watch it.

That's a really nice phone at that price point. I'm sure it'll most likely end up costing more though. :(

Debunked so many times. It adds NOTHING to your viewing. It is all in the mind: I spent R23 000 so it MUST be better. It is a gimmick and this has been shown on the internet hundreds of times...Google it.

TVs were convex now they're concave. Big difference. On the larger sizes it so that you get less distortion at the edges from your viewing angle.

Curved phones are nice because when they're in your pocket they follow the curve of your leg, and the same when in your hand. Never mind that phones with curved screens are easier to use with one hand.

And don't forget they are supposed to help you when making calls, the curve is supposed to help against outside noise interfering with the small speaker.
