Or we could go at it from a different approach:

If the underlying technology is CDMA-based (e.g. HSPA), it's 3G
If the underlying technology is OFDMA-based (e.g. LTE, LTE Advanced), it's 4G.

Problem is, no one felt like sticking to ITU's recommendation for the speeds.

It was a crap decision by Apple to cave in to the carriers (AT&T specifically). Apple has normally been the one company to resist the carriers. And now they suddenly capitulate. Weird

The only change is that Jobs is dead.

No they didn't. They just have some of the patents that are part of the LTE patent pool.
This is simply capitulating to AT&T. Very poor form

You guys make it sound like Jobs scared them s***less.

Well, he pretty much subverted their power when the iPhone came out. The carriers were not allowed any control over the process. Android was initially the same for the first year.

Jobs did the same to the music execs as well. Their demands fell on deaf ears for many years.

We should stick to 3GPP standards and definitions, otherwise what is the point of the standards. The standards are the basis of easy global access and lower pricing, so bucking them is very short-sighted

“In South Africa it became an issue, firstly because of Cell C blurring the lines with their ‘4GS’ term, and secondly because the Advertising Standards Authority has seen itself as the arbiter of such definitions in advertising materials,” said Goldstuck.

Because advertising soemthing when it slearly isnt something is misleading and falls under the Advertising standards authority.
