My wife's Lumia 630 just died after 23 months ... went very, very hot and then died.

Cannot switch it on again, so we need a new phone. The MTN contract is due for renewal and thought we'd go for the 550 or 650, but MTN have no stock of any Windows phone. :-(

So it's either switch to Andoid (which we don't want to do) or buy the 650 from Orange.

Damn, but Microsoft sure make it difficult to stay loyal.

Alternatively, you can pick up a 950/950xl for around 3-4k on carbonite..no idea why they would sell for so low, excellent phones

Still have a Nokia 610 Windows phone which is still working 4 yrs later.
Thankfully I I upgraded it to Sony M2 which is now also due for upgrade.

Both good phones.
Would I go for a Windows phone again?

Never again, I hated the way it locked a person out of doing extra normal things, web browser couldn't accept a port number. so no Web interfaces for your NAS or router or other services.
Direct File transfer from PC is non existent, you have to use One Drive.
no memory expansion for SD card
Multitasking is a joke.
No Apps e.g. banking and local shops etc. very annoying.
Rebooting about once a week is too often.
The OS is MS ***, pretty UI but rusty old nuts & bolts under the hood.

so OP sad to say but it's time to bite the bullet and go either android or iOS.

Drake2007, you're comparing an old Windows Phone 7 phone to new Windows 10 Mobile phones? There is no comparison!

web browser couldn't accept aport number. so no Web interfaces for your NAS or router or other services.
Never tried this, so no idea.

Direct File transfer from PC is non existent, you have to use One Drive.
I just plug the cable into my laptop and transfer away, no problem. All offline.

no memory expansion for SD card
The 650, 950 and 950XL all take micro SD cards. Most other W10M phones manufactured by others also take SD carrds.

Multitasking is a joke.
Many apps can run in the background. I understand in pretty much the same way as Android runs in the background?

No Apps e.g. banking and local shops etc. very annoying.
I'm happy with my ABSA and FNB apps on my phone. Standard Bank and Capitec have apps. Pick 'n Pay have a Windows app. Not looked for other shops, but there will be less. Which bank do you use?

Rebooting about once a week is too often.
My 950 needs a reboot about once a month or less.

Using her old Nokia 610 until we get a new phone, so it's amazing to see just how far Windows on phones has come. Sure, Windows phones have fewer apps, but I'm not an app junkie just for the sake of it. Drake2007, seems your ideas about the capabilities of Windows phones are pretty old.

The 950 is the same size as the 650, so although she prefers a smaller phone, we may just go for the 950. Just wish the Alcatel Idol 4S was available for international use!

Went to the physical Orange store on Saturday and found they had moved out.

Went online and ordered a new Lumia 650 for the softness and later received confirmation that it had been shipped. Went onto the site last night to find that Orange has now closed their online business in South Africa as well!

@mustang, I feel your pain, and I'm glad you can even improve with the L650. I saw rumors that HP will be producing a line of mid-range Windows Mobile phones, hope this happens so that there is an upgrade path from my L640 XL. BTW, I'm getting up to four days on a charge, or two days with heavy use. The battery life gradually improved with recent updates. To all nay-sayers and ignorants, Windows Mobile is a great extension to Windows 10 on other devices. If you love Windows, you'll love Windows Mobile. There are some apps that I do miss, but in general I can't imagine switching to a droid or an iPhone.

remember when blackberry was dying and we all knew that one guy who took out a contract wiht a blackberry despite it being the bad call, despite all the advice from friends and family and forums?
you guys sticking to win phone now are the same.

I do have to qualify I have worked on windows phones, and the hardware is comparable to android. the OS is different but in a good way (unlike apple)

the sad thing is, MS took a good phone brand with a good OS, and simply tinkered themselves out of the market.
the segment is too small and never gained traction.

window phone failed and died not due to bad hardware or software, but due to entering the market too late. like always MS waited to long to do the thing.

want proof windows phone is dead? lets look at the best performing mobile games of 2016. how many of them have a windows phone version?
and before you argue that you dont play games, that is the only way to truly measure the different platforms against each other.

sure the local banking apps have come a long way and got the dedicated resourse to port the android app to Windows phone, but unfortunately, its too little too late.

the ship has sailed, move on. get a real phone, or a feature phone, you will be in about the same boat as you are now...

A feature phone cant do what a windows 10 phone can. Android phones cant do what a windows 10 phone can. iOS phones cant do what a windows 10 phones can...

And vice versa except feature phones, smartphones can do what they can.

A lot of people don't buy a phone to play games on, they just usually stick to what they know how to use and cant be bothered to try a different platform. I have had countless flagship android phones which I had no need for playing games or the pricetag. (but yet fell for the flagship trap) Buying cheaper android phones usually resulted in a horrible non-gaming experience until very recently. Never did like the Apple UI/restrictions/macosx-ios environment

People use and always will buy what they prefer. I myself prefer having to sign in to one account and everything syncs flawlessly between windows 10 devices without having to set up countless apps/deal with multiple daily updates/force closes due to crappy updates/rooting(optional)/customizing 10 million UI options/obsolete phone due to android releasing a new version every other day :p The other bonus is having never to worry about malware/virus infections on Windows 10 Mobile as opposed to google that has infected apps on their own store.

Been using a Lumia 435, Lumia 640 and Lumia 950XL. Aside from the 435 being super cheap and slow to start up if you had it turned off, I rarely notice a difference in using it across the different spec loadouts, except the epic camera on the 950XL.

You have to admit, the camera on the L950/950XL is super awesome. :D

The latest update added panarama mode from within the camera app (at last!). I've had iphone and Android users comment on the quality of the L950 photos.
