Macbook pro hard drive

I have a clients Macbook pro which cannot get past 50% on bootup.

I was able to login to disk utility and erased the drive then reinstalled Yosemite over the internet.

Again, only get to 50 % on bootup.

I've tried all the options I can find so I'm going with hard drive issues.

iStore doesn't seem to have a phone number to call so - any idea what a 500GB and 1Tb Seagate drive will cost ?

I wasn't able to get either verbose or safe-mode to work.

Macbook Pro - if I could get into into it I could tell you which model - there is zip on the case besides Macbook Pro.

Underneath that there's usually a line of very small text including the model number. The model typically begins with the letter A.

it's odd that booting stops at exactly 50& each time, yet the installation completed.
if it was a drive problem, in theory, it should have also froze at some point during install - to my mind anyway

Thanks all.

I'm only going with hard drive issues because I've pretty much tried everything else Google has to offer. I'm by no means proficient on Mac OS repairs so it's a learning experience.

Scan hard drive for possible delays/errors. If you can't find any, replacing HDD won't help.
Boot from external source and run disk utility. I don't know boot restriction on MAC :), if they are, you can always move hard drive to PC for testing.

It could be also mainboard failure, it is why I suggest check hard drive first to be sure.

That will do it. I have my doubts it's a HDD problem but you'll soon see. You should also check the SMART status.

Are you able to install the OS to a thumb drive and have that boot up the mac?

Plugged the drive into my Mac Air, disk utility - verify, failed

Repair disk - Disk Utility can't repair this disk. Reformat.

What I can't figure out is, is the drive failing because of physical failure or because of partition issues.

It sounds good, but to install driver on bootable media?
Easier is to test it on PC with SATA controller in order:

1. SMART report
2. Fill up entire surface with zeros. Continue if no errors.
3. SMART
4. Scan entire surface for delays/errors

Got into Verbose mode

Gets to checking catalog file

After a minute or two gives a message saying boot failed and shuts down.
