So I know this is a very old and irritating question but here goes...

I am in the market for a new laptop and have decided between the Macbook Air and Macbook Pro and am leaning towards the Pro. Id love to get the Air but only leaning towards the Pro because of the processor power and upgradabiltiy - even tho inside the Air is winning cause of the form factor (so if someone can convince me towards the Air I might reconsider it again).

I already have a SSD that I will install to the Pro but also want to upgrade the RAM to say 8 gigs for now so what RAM is best suited to work with the Pro? I know any laptop RAM would work so just looking for recommendations.

We normally use straight forward SO-DIMMs.
2 x JM1600KSN-4G TRANSCEND 4GB JETRAM DDR-1600 NOTEBOOK SO-DIMM

If you travel a lot then I would suggest a 15" pro, otherwise just strap a separate 23" screen onto the Air if you are mostly office bound, and make sure you get a mini Displayport To DVi adaptor as well.

RAM and SSD makes the most difference just make sure you get the "bigger" graphics card as they are not upgradable.

Cheers.

Hi a few things to consider.

Taking apart a new MBP these days is not recommended unless you really know what you are doing. All new MPB both 13 and 15 inch come with a base of 8 Gigs of ram, and all had SSD drives as standard. So not really sure why you want to put another SSD in.

Thanks for the replies. I would be going for the standard MBP non-retina one. I would mostly be using at the office connected to a 24" monitor and only when I need to see clients will I have to bring it along. I am very torn between the two - even tho my brain is saying the best choice is the Pro for upgradability and future proof ect... I will use it mostly for web design, and little photoshop and some coding.

My Macbook Pro 2012 13inch model is running a tad slow these days, 4gb ram, 120gb ssd + 500gb 5400 rpm setup as fusion drive.

RAM - Amazon US have 16gb for $62 including courier to my door, should I rather go for 8gb at $49?
I run Windows 7 in VMware fusion.

Should i Replace the 500gb 5400rpm hdd with maybe a Crucial BX200 240GB SATA 2.5 Inch Internal Solid State Drive - CT240BX200SSD1 for $65 roughly?

8GB RAM and the larger SSD should sort you out. If you have the cash to spare, spring for the 16GB RAM and get it over and done with. It makes running multiple VM's an absolute pleasure.

A clean install of OS X also helps to speed up the old girl a bit.
