Maintaining a 3G connection

Hey

Here's my story. I connect to the net with my 3G enabled cellphone (Nokia N73). I lock it to 3G but recently I've been trying dual mode because sometimes it loses 3G signal and since it's locked, no connection.

Now while connecting it goes fine for about 10 minutes. Not super fast, actually I think my dial up matches it's speed. Back to the problem, so after say 10 or 15 minutes using the Firefox browser it refuses to load any page, giving me the error there is no connection. I click on the connection button on the taskbar bottom right and that's fine, it's sending and receiving data, don't know to who or from where but it's still running.

I tried it with Internet Explorer and get the same error after a few minutes. Btw when this no connection error occurs it will either be in 3G or EDGE mode, it switches alot.

Any suggestions? Would buying a 3G modem help me maintain the connection for at least longer that a few minutes. I'm in Durban if that helps.

No, getting a modem would be the essentially the same as using your cellphone, getting an extended aerial might work, but I'm not clued up with 3G etc ;)

Do you have any programs on your phone that are trying to access the net? I found that my "Push Email" app was disconnecting my pc connection to the net.

Welcome to the club. I have the same problem for 2 months. At work I only have GPRS and no problem. At home I have Edge but cannot connect. And this is with the same laptop. I first thought it was my settings, but this cannot be the problem as I use the same cell phone at work and at home.
My cell does not have email.
When I phone helpdesk they cannot help me but request that I check with my SP.
This is ongoing and I keep loosing my bundles at the end of my month.

This is my 1st bundle, it's only 500Mb and I thought I could finish it in few hours, it's now a few weeks. I wanted the 2gig bundle but the salesperson advised me since it's my first bundle I should try out a smaller amount. It's a damn good thing I listened to him.

Still nobody knows what the problem is :(

If this happens, are you able to disconnect and then reconnect ?

what happens if you switch to GPRS only ? does it then stay stable ?

500mb

ja i have the same problem,i work at the 3rd largest platinum producer in the world. i use 120 to 150 mb per month, because my download speed at the office (laptop vista ultimate with 2 gig ram and huawei e220 usb modem) is max 75 kpbs. the mine is 6 kilos from Mooinooi, (40 kilos from Rustenburg). At mooinooi under the vodacom mast i manage 200 kpbs. why cant vodacom make the signal stronger., a email 560 kb takes 3 minutes to send. what more can i say ?

I cant get straight GPRS cos the phone is EDGE enabled, but yes I have tried it with EDGE only and I get the same problem. When a page can't load up, i disconnect, but when I connect again the page still can't load up and the connection is established and running fine so it's very puzzling

Bluetooth?

Are you connecting the PC and the phone via bluetooth? Rather use the cable as bluetooth often lets the connection die.

As far as I know, any Edge enabled phone will be able to connect via the slower GPRS protocol - they are basically the same technology.

You probably right, but my understanding is that it will always use EDGE because EDGE is GPRS but just a little faster and it always shows "E" instead of "G" when connected

Nope I know what you're saying though. I've never used bluetooth or infared to connect a phone to a PC. I always use the cable
