i have a 1990 VW citi golf 1600 carb and would like to know roughly how much a major/minor service would cost, what parts do they actually service/replace and where in cape town are there good and honest mechanics that will do a decent job and not f*** my car up and still charge me a arm and a leg.

A major service will set you back around R1,500 for new spark plugs, filters, oil, sundries and labour. You may find it cheaper, but work on R1,5k as a base price.

Any car service centre will service a Citi Golf. There is nothing 'special' about a Golf - no specialist required. Basic simple mechanics.

will probably work out cheaper if i buy those parts myself and just pay some for the labour.

Had a golf in uni, used to buy service kits from Goldwagon (I think thats what they were called) and had it fit at a local auto shop. Always worked out to like 500 bucks less than everyone else tried charging me.
