I don’t usually read the Yebo news but I glanced though it this morning and saw something interesting, the paragraph explaining about free minutes said the following:

"Free minutes can be used for national, data, Vodacom Voicemail and Mobile fax calls."

Then it goes on to say that data calls to 082 23 083 24 and 083 28 numbers don’t apply to free minutes.

If I read this correctly then I should be able to use my free minutes for 3G data access? Nowhere does it say that the "data" calls are restricted to MMS or SMS, besides we pay for these anyhow.

V3G??? Was this a typo or has something changed that we don’t know about? Or does everyone else know and I am the only poephaul in the dark?

Superb marketining language they use in those newsletters... Telling you things in such a way that you dont really understand and that you think it is something different than what it is. Thats the way they do it.

You can use them for circuit switched data I presume, at a massive 9.6kbps unless you have HSCSD. Enjoy. :D You won't be able to use them for "normal" packet switched data.

It can be used for CSD but it depends on the dial up number. If it is a premier rated number it wont come off your free minutes. Vodacoms csd number 082234 1000 for eaxmple wont come off your free minutes but mwebs dial up number would. As well as 0860 or 0861 numbers would come off the free minutes, you would need to check with the ISP if those numbers would come off your free minutes...

What does it cost?
MTNdataFAST calls are charged at normal voice tariffs (Peak and Off-Peak), according to your contract, with the exception of SMS only, billed at CSD tariffs. Inclusive minutes and carry-over minutes are depleted first (with the exception of premium-rated calls), after which you will be charged the applicable voice tariff

I think I should try, cause I took the data card on contract, and I get 100 free minutes a month that I never use.

AAAG it seems that my N70 don't have HSCSD capability. Does the data cards- Huawei/Nokia 6600 have perhaps?

"Free minutes can be used for national, data, Vodacom Voicemail and Mobile fax calls."
Can you give me the exact issue you read it and where?

Was this related to pre-paid or contract?

If I'm not mistaken your pre-paid free minutes can be used for data and will charge at R2/Mb, but I'll check.

Costs are depdent on the number you are useing for your dial up. So if you are using VC 0822491000 it wont come off your free minutes but you will get charged at the rate of out of bundle package.

If you using a dial up to mweb or tiscali ot netwactive and mweb supplies you with a 011 number or 0860 or 0861 AND you have free minutes, then u use the minutes that you have available. However if you are out of your minutes then that number 011 is a local call if you in the JHB area, But if you in CT and you use a 011 number then its national then get a local pop number from the ISP or your IT deprt.

Also the ISP may have a number that is premeir rated or doesnt coem off your free minutes, so you would need to check with your ISP and see what their rules are. ( as far as I remeber as CSD , well that long ago...) V3G should be able to confirm

Yebo News October 2006... They were referring to Contract Talk time packages

There is no reference to CSD data, just "Data", I am sure if I took that article to a very clever lawyer I would be able to get 120 minutes of data from Vodacom, except that in the end they would throw E&OE at me..

Nothing is free....

On cellphones though there's a fixed national rate, so whether its in CT or JHB it'd be the same rate regardless.

How can your free minutes be used for data at R2/mb? Surely if you're using free minutes it'd be HSCSD/CSD which would then simply deplete the bundled minutes by call duration, regardless of the amount of data transferred?

To clarify (don't think I gave clear answer above)

On pre-paid/hybrid contracts, your account is loaded with the correct balance at the beginning of the month to the value of your included minutes. This credit is in rands not minutes.

You can use this credit for data @ R2/Mb, if you wish.

Ok thought that might have been what you meant but wasn't sure.
Thanks.
