...some local languages and Russian apparently don't have a definite article...

Neither definite, nor indefinite. This is why, when Russians speak English, they'll often say something along the lines of: "I am engineer" instead of "an engineer".

This has nothing to do with respect - of course one respects them. My point is a philological one. Having non-native English speakers who don't use an article in their mother tongue tell English-speakers how their language should be used is, er, presumptuous. One cannot simply ignore history or deprecate what was a perfectly acceptable usage over many years and call it wrong. That's why we still speak of Cologne not Köln, Munich not München, Paris not "Paree", etc. They're all correct in English. The Ukrainians should learn a little respect for other people's languages. :p

Enough said. Back to topic.

Powerful argument there, GGG.

Off topic but you're gonna dig your heels in no matter how powerful an argument, so why bother - you are not worth it, a trait you have proved to many members here time and again. If you can show me ONE instance of substantially admitting that you are wrong, then I may bother with you. But for now, you remain a homophobic, corporate, conservative fool in my mind. There is no point wasting energy on you.

Not the place to spill your bile, GGG. Clearly you can't tolerate diverse viewpoints.

MH17 AIRLINE CREW RECALLS HAPPY VOYAGERS BOARDING FLIGHT

An airline ground crew member who checked passengers in for doomed flight MH17 has made an emotional post on Facebook, recalling sending off holidaymakers, children and grandparents with wishes for "a pleasant flight".

"A loving family of six with their 10 pieces luggage that I had to put in the system. 'After long time we're returning home'," wrote Renuka Manisha Virangna Birbal.

In the post, which has been shared almost 10,000 times, Birbal said she asked two football fans with business class tickets whether they would like to sit together. After a moment's hesitation, one joked, "No, I want some rest."

"It was busy at the check-in desk, so I went there to help my colleagues," she wrote, remembering "a child smiling and waving at me."

A total of 298 people, 80 of them children, from 11 different countries died when the plane exploded over rebel-held Ukraine, allegedly blown out of the sky by missile fired by pro-Russian separatists.

"Mom when do we see our luggage again?" asked one excited child.

"A man who is about to start a new life in Malaysia... a family get dropped off by their grandparents, kids first holiday far away," remembered the airline employee.

"Grandma makes photos of how her children and grandchildren check in. This time I do not mind that I am in the picture.

"A newly married couple, on the way to their honeymoon... a beautiful little girl held by her mother, her father behind them pushing the stroller. She's so beautiful, a half Dutch half Malaysian with beautiful big eyes. She kindly smiled at me.

"A man who could still join the flight to be on time for the funeral of his mother. Grandchildren travelling with their grandparents.

"Suddenly I see a familiar face, it is our colleague from the MH ticket counter. He proudly shows me his son, wife and daughter. With a big smile he waved 'See you soon'."

"A final farewell to the crew, till next time! And then we removed the bridge."

"The last time I saw them... I wished them a pleasant flight"

"Rest in peace dear passengers and crew," Birbal said in her post, signing off "on behalf of the ground handling agents of flight MH017 on Thursday July 17."

One militiaman described arriving at the site expecting to fight military pilots who'd ejected, only to find the body of a young child face down in a clearing and some luggage.
That must have been a awful moment.

MH17 BLACK BOXES DELIVERED TO BRITISH INVESTIGATORS

The black boxes from the Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 that crashed in eastern Ukraine, killing all on board, have been delivered to Britain for expert analysis, the government said Wednesday.

The recorders have been delivered to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch headquarters in Farnborough, southwest of London.

"We can confirm that the two black boxes from MH17 have been delivered by the Dutch Safety Board to the Air Accidents Investigation Branch at Farnborough for download," a Department for Transport spokeswoman told AFP.

POSSIBLE MANY MORE MH17 BODIES WITH WRECKAGE: AUSTRALIA PM

Australia's Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Wednesday it was possible that many bodies from the MH17 crash were still lying in the open in Ukraine.

All 298 people onboard the Malaysia Airlines jet, including 28 Australian nationals and nine residents, were killed after the aircraft was apparently shot down over Ukraine last week.

"It's quite possible that many bodies are still out there, in the open in the European summer, subject to interference, and subject to the ravages of heat and animals," Abbott told a press conference in Canberra.

Abbott called for a "full recovery search" of the crash site in the rebel-held eastern Ukraine, saying such an operation was "necessary if all of the bodies are to be recovered".

The Australian leader added that he had "serious concerns" about the recovery of the victims' bodies.

"It has been up until now quite unprofessional," he said.

"As long as it's possible that there are any Australian remains out there we owe it to the families to do our utmost to recover them."

Dutch experts have said they were only sure 200 bodies had been recovered so far -- less than what the pro-Russian rebels had promised.

International monitors also said some remains were left decomposing under the sweltering summer heat in the vast crash site in rebel-held east Ukraine.

BRITAIN STILL EXPORTING ARMS TO RUSSIA: MPS

Britain is still exporting arms and military equipment to Russia, according to a parliamentary report released Wednesday just hours after Prime Minister David Cameron rapped France for selling weapons to Moscow.

Cameron has urged the EU to ban military sales to Russia -- accused of equipping and training separatists in eastern Ukraine -- and said Monday Britain had already halted such arms exports.

The British government promised in March to stop military sales to Russia.

However the report found 251 licences were still in place for the sale to Russia of controlled goods worth at least £132 million ($225 million, 167 million euro).

The licences allowed exports such as sniper rifles, small arms ammunition, body armour, military communications equipment, night sights, and "equipment employing cryptography", the report said.

Just 31 licences had been suspended or revoked, while on three others Russia was no longer permitted as an export destination, the report found.

Cameron has taken a tough stance against Moscow, which has come under fire after Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 was allegedly shot down by pro-Russian separatists in eastern Ukraine, killing 298 people.

Russia has already been hit with Western sanctions for its role in a protracted crisis in ex-Soviet state Ukraine and is facing more still over the MH17 disaster.

Both Washington and London have questioned France's decision to maintain 1.2 billion euro ($1.6 billion) deal to provide Russia with two warships.

Cameron said it would be "unthinkable" for Britain to supply warships to Russia and said no European country should sell arms to Russia.

However the parliamentary report by the Commons Committees on Arms Export Controls appeared to contradict government claims.

"Russia is an authoritarian regime. We should have been applying a more cautious approach for some time in regard to Russia," said John Stanley, chairman of the Commons Committees on Arms Export Controls.

The committee also criticised the granting of export licenses to Syria for chemicals which could allow it to make chemical weapons.

A government spokesman denied that arms restrictions had been softened.

"The majority of export licences that remain in place for Russia are for commercial use but we are keeping all licences under review," the spokesman said.

"The UK aims to operate one of the most robust and transparent export control systems in the world. Every application is examined rigorously against internationally recognised criteria."

France needs to donate those ships to SA, we are really good at ensuring that expensive military equipment does not gets used, and just lies around and rots away.

This will ensure that the equipment cannot be used for nefarious purposes.

Doubt it. Missiles are incredibly fast on their own, but the plane was heading towards it as well, so you need to combine both velocities.

I'm aware of the speed, but looking at US intel the missile was launched some way in front of the plane's flight path, so who knows, it could be visible in that case.

This is a similar system and there is quite a smoke trail behind the missile that could be visible for some distance.

CNN has just reported that two Ukrainian fighter jets have just been shot down by the separatists.

Wonder what weapons were used to do that ?

Do they still have BUK systems in the Ukraine, or was this Manpads ?
