A man was accidentally shot dead by his father-in-law after travelling more than 7 000km to see him for a surprise visit.

Christopher Bergan (37) flew from Norway to Florida in the US to surprise his father-in-law, Richard Dennis, for his 61st birthday, PEOPLE reports.

The pensioner was so startled when Christopher jumped out of some bushes in his backyard that he shot and killed his son-in-law, thinking it was an intruder, ABC news reports.

According to police, Richard had heard banging on the back door that evening and decided to turn on the porch light when Christopher leaped out from the bushes to surprise him, scaring the old man.

Nothing wrong with knocking/ringing the doorbell on the front door and you being there being the surprise.

Few things I hate more than surprise visits from family. If I can I've always pretended I'm not home

Giving some people ideas, here. Luckily my in-laws aren't bothering me.

But, ja, a father "accidentally" shooting son-in-law sounds suspicious. Lol, it's where the saying comes from when you're expecting a baby daughter to get a shotgun ready for all the boys who'll come over.

What I don't get - the old man had an argument with another relative earlier that night who banged on his door the same way, then later when he hears the same banging on the door he opens the door and starts shooting? So does that mean he was prepared to kill the other relative?
