Man blows hand off in shotgun accident

DELTONA, Fla. (AP) - Authorities say a Deltona man who blew off part of his left hand with a short-barrel shotgun could face charges for possessing an illegal firearm.

The Volusia County Sheriff's Office reports that 24-year-old Kenneth Haven got out of bed to check a strange noise early Tuesday morning. He told deputies he was carrying his shotgun when he tripped over a dumbbell and fell, causing the gun to discharge.

Erm, my dad did exactly that in Swakopmund a few years back...:erm:

It's actually very easy to do...was cleaning the shotgun when he saw that the release mechanism wasn't working on the gun, took it outside the garage, put in a shell, and saw what he had to fix, turned around with the gun broken over his right arm...hit his elbow on the lawnmower, and the gun fell and closed...then to stop it blowing his head off he hit it out of the way with his left hand, just as it went off.

Two seconds later one finger and his entire palm was sailing through the garage roof...very easy to do, even if you have worked with guns all your life...

One of the traffic officers here in Durban, was a colleague of my grandfathers at the time, this going back like 15 years. He and his colleague rushed to the scene of a robbery and his partner had his handgun cocked and pointed down in the car. Another car slammed into their vehicle and the gun went off, bullet went right through his shoe and the floor and lodged itself into the road. He laughs about it today when u mention it, although he's one toe less now
