Durban - REGESH Govender believes he is a step closer to justice after his neighbour was found guilty of crimen injuria.

During Diwali celebrations, last November, his neighbour, Johan Olivier, called Govender a "coo**e vaalie" in a post on Facebook.

Govender had been setting off fireworks at the time.

The post went viral and Olivier faced backlash from the Indian community.

He subsequently deleted the post and posted an apology to the Hindu community.

Damn, so is someone going to draw up a list of bad words not to call someone - or will the judges decide as they go which words are derogatory.

Or do we go with this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_slurs_by_ethnicity

Below is US specific, but imagine taking someone to court for calling a white person a Honkey.

Is whitey considered offensive to white people in SA?
Getting the courts involved for namecalling... what-a-lol.

Olivier, who referred to himself as an animal rights activist, said the sound of the fireworks affected his dogs.

Is it possible to train dogs to not flip out at the sound of fireworks?

With one of mine it was possible. The other which is a staffie there is literally no chance at all.
Certain breeds are predisposed to fear of thunder and fireworks, its pretty much why you always see the same ones listed as missing after Diwali, Guy Fawkes, New years etc.

Dogs which live in naturally noisy environments are tolerant without training. For obvious reasons I suppose.

No defense on the racism , diwali/deepavali/breyani should not be an excuse for utter lawlessness., light a lamp like your religion says.

Dogs don't naturally have an aversion to loud noises like thunder [or fireworks]. You can thank their human owners for that.

Huh? Every dog I've ever had has freaked out in regards to thunder, running to me/family.

It's probably too late for your current dogs but in future you should try being less stressed about it. Dogs will sense your mood and react accordingly.

Erm, I have never stressed about it, I only usually realize there's thunder once the dog comes running.
You're making a generalization there that depends on the dog.

Note I don't mean freak out running around destroying stuff, more like hiding/being close to "pack".

Not sure about fireworks, but hunting dogs are trained not to react to gun shots.
You would probably have to expose them to fireworks noise until they do not react to it any more.
