He's lucky he's not in a police cell. I intervened in a mugging in Shepherds Bush, London, punching the mugger to the pavement and took a knife out of his pocket that he hadn't pulled yet. I spent the night in the cells for assault but was released the next morning.
Did the person getting mugged not back up your story?
The law is fairly clear on self defence and defence of others.

He did. The mugger laid a charge of assault against both of us and the cops had to hold us and the mugger. Only when the mugger was convinced to drop charges by the cops after an all night session with the mugger were we informed that if the victim dropped charges, we would be free to go. Criminals use the law in the UK.
That doesn’t gel with personal experience.

In an updated statement, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 8.15pm this evening (Monday 12 August 2024), we were called to reports of a stabbing on Portland Street in the city centre.
"A man in his 20s has been taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that are described as not-life threatening. A man in 20s has been arrested on suspicion on a Section 18 assault and remains in police custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing."
