Durban - A 23-year-old man was shot dead after his car broke down in the Missionlands area in Verulam on Saturday.

According to Prem Balram, director of Reaction Unit SA, the victim's pregnant girlfriend had also been assaulted.

Balram said reaction officers had stumbled upon the incident at around 7pm while searching for robbery suspects pertaining to another incident.

"During the patrol a Reaction Officer noticed a blue VW Golf parked contra-flow to traffic. The officer turned his vehicle around to make inquiries and noticed two males fleeing into the dense bush.

I still say, everyone should be looking at Polycarb window protection systems. Far lighter and as good as bullet resistant glass. Higher the level, higher price sadly. But as we know, government just isn't doing enough to protect us.

We are going to be seeing more and more of this, they know they can get away with it and it's way easier to just kill and steal what you want than to risk being killed.

You really have to be a special type of scum to do something like this. It's not even surprising anymore.

Rip. This is indeed the new norm in SA. I wish an excruciatingly painful and slow death for the perps and hope the girlfriend of the deceased victim recovers

Reaching the point where you can't leave the house after dark, and when you are at home you're behind electric fences and razor wire and still not safe.

I discovered quite recently in the Western Cape that leaving your house after dark even just to pop to the shop which is a few 100m away can be a fatal event. I was attacked and although I managed to beat him off it made me realize that opportunity lies in wait like a lion and will pounce on the first prey it can find regardless of sex, age or race.

Once you realize that these lions walk among us is makes you more alert and vigilant.
