A man who took a braai stand into his room on Monday night to keep warm after having a braai with friends was found dead several hours later.

The incident happened at his home in Kariega in the Eastern Cape. It is suspected he died from smoke inhalation, police said.

CO? Did you mean CO2?

Carbon monoxide is highly toxic in the ppm range, produced by unvented combustion. Carbon dioxide suffocates, but only at implausibly high concentrations for indoor air.

0-9 ppm CO: no health risk; normal CO levels in air.
10-29 ppm CO: problems over long-term exposure; chronic problems such as headaches, nausea
30-35 ppm CO: flu-like symptoms begin to develop, especially among the young and the elderly.
36-99 ppm CO: flu-like symptoms among all; nausea, headaches, fatigue or drowsiness, vomiting.
100+ ppm CO: severe symptoms; confusion, intense headaches; ultimately brain damage, coma, and/or death, especially at levels 300-400+ ppm

Sure, lets drop Maths and Science from schools. It's not like it will kill you to not know what carbon monoxide is.
No stress. The local sangoma will strike lightning where it's required to protect you
