Mantashe announces plans to buy 5,000MW of renewable energy

Mineral Resources and Energy Minister, Gwede Mantashe, on Tuesday, told Parliament that government will open a bid in July to procure additional renewable energy.

Mantashe, who was delivering his Budget Vote speech for the 2023/24 financial year, said Bid Windows 7 and 8 would each give 5,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable energy.

Why cant Ipps just connect to the grid.

Then these clowns don't have to spend a cent.
... because in many of the places where IPPs produce power there isn't the line capacity required to connect them to the grid... and legislation needs to be enabled to facilitate this... and surprise:

"While something had been sent to the national legislature, this failed to meet legislative drafting minimum standards. It’s understood how for the past couple of weeks Parliament’s Bills Office is panel beating this document to ensure legislative drafting and format compliance.

This amendment legislation is crucial to establish a transmission systems operator, but also to set standards, tariffs and norms like wheeling, or selling spare private power capacity to the national grid. Eskom may still construct it’s planned 8,500kms of transmission lines, but without the amended electricity regulation legislation, for example, spare power from embedded private power projects can’t really be wheeled onto the national grid, for everyone’s benefit."

July, why not tomorrow?
It feels a bit like they're pretending to pull their fingers out their ass...

To narrow the electricity supply and demand gap, Mantashe said his team would present an updated Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) to Cabinet soon.

The Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2019 – the country’s blueprint policy for electricity generation – is currently under review.

“We intend to present the draft to Cabinet in the second quarter of this financial year.
So if I've got this right: A plan that's been wholly ineffectual has only now been reviewed and will be presented later this year only to be wholly ineffectual for the next 5 years. These plans mean fkall really if nobody has the will to carry them out properly.

Mantashe intends to increase the grid's capacity by 5,000MW by means of bid windows 7 and 8.

We should have been running on natural-gas to power, over a decade ago.
That was the main reason that Ankerlig was built.

Take a look at the 2019 IRP. They planned to add 2600MW of renewables to the grid every year. How much did they end up adding?
