The only way this could really work is if everyone became an independent contractor to the company they work for, and then registered themselves as provisional tax payers.

While it is almost impossible for this to work for everyone at a large scale, you could probably make a sizeable dent in tax revenue if only "high earners" in a company did this. Think C level execs and key positions like senior developers/engineers etc.
Nope. Unless you can show your employer that you have more than one client, they will deduct income tax.

1. Where are they right now?
2. With Gwede in charge, it's impossible.
3. 10 years is not temporary.
4. Okay, which port has space for 12 ships for 10 years?

They are not the answer. They are for shithole countries that only one ship powers the whole country.
Even though I don't like Konfab's response (marine life etc etc) the power ships do give an idea of the scale of power production needed - not insurmountable IMHO.

Maybe Gwede is right in a way; it could be solved in 12 months, just not by him and the ANC.

Why don't we just give all the unemployable people bicycles and connect them to the grid. We can solve the unemployment and energy crises in one foul swoop. Will also be 100% green so win win.
They'll want minimum wage at the least. How many thousands of bicycles would be needed for just 1MW, let alone 6,000?

I would say use the criminals to work off their time. 1 day on the bike = 2 hours (or whatever) off your sentence...

1 bicycle = 50W
1000000W = 1MW
1000000/50=20000 bicycles.
20000 x 6000 = 120 million bicycles to stave off stage 6 LS.

You have a point, with criminals alone we should easily exceed our EAF. No wages required

Probably the wisest words in this thread. Our expectations are so low now that he could tell us it'll be fixed in 15 years and we'd say no way is that possible.

Meanwhile China builds roughly our entire (theoretical) generating capacity in a single year.

It is possible. Just not with our leaders in charge.

Noise pollution as well as air pollution are already given at this point. I would wager that the power ships are better for the air than Eskom's coal stations.
Noise pollution is a problem, but it goes away as soon as the contract is ended and SA has a bunch of CCGTs, solar and what not. Marine ecosystems can recover.

Because container ports are renowned marine sanctuaries. Besides which, the noise pollution they make is temporary. It sucks that the animals have to suffer, but right now there are hospitals and water pump stations without electricity. If you want to tell me you value the life of sea cucumbers more than people, then by all means say so.
I know that you stated this tongue in cheek, but in the case of Coega, it is actually true. A number of marine reserves exist, one of them (St Croix) slap bang outside Coega.

And if you aren't aware of the symbiotic relationship between marine life and humans, best to do some research. It is estimated that between 50-80% of the earth's oxygen comes from marine life, most of it microscopic phytoplankton, which the whales devour. Something to remember next time when you are out of breath.

Sure sure ...

Marine ecosystems can recover.
Not when they are wiped out. The African Penquin is an endangered species that breeds on St Croix (their largest breeding ground worldwide), and their numbers have steadily been dwindling over the past 100 years.

Their populations are believed to be just 2% of what they were at the start of the 20th century, and a 2019 count yielded a historic low of less than 21,000 breeding pairs.

This is also ascribed to the amount of ships in the area. Port Elizabeth is the largest filling station in the Southern Hemisphere, coutesty of ANC Cadres. This is not normal fuel, it is thick heavy oil that marine ships use.:

How about ACTUALLY getting our offshore natural gas to the Gas Turbines.
Wait... The Cadre's make waaaaay more bux, supplying and burning diesel instead.

I know right? It's also 100% the reason why they were built in those locations in the first place.

I follow... we should kill the whales. Oxygen problem solved.

My bad, I should have finished the sentence. The whale poop is essential to the ocean's carbon cycle.
