THE body of Marilize Nortier, 18, matriculator of Langenhoven Gymnasium in Oudtshoorn, was found only hours after she died in the wreckage of a BMW in a canal along the Kango Grotte road outside town on Saturday.
Although the accident was reported to have occurred between 03:00 and 04:00 on Sunday morning, the Oudtshoorn Emergency Services were called to the scene only after 07:42 - about 10 km outside Oudtshoorn - after farm workers saw the car where it was on his passenger side at the bottom of the canal was full of water.
When the car was pulled out of the water, Marilize was still strapped into the front passenger seat.
Captain Louis Visser, spokesman for the Oudtshoorn Police, said the cause of the accident is still unknown. Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.
Visser said there is no final result yet on the cause of Marilize's death. It is not yet known whether she died or was drowning due to the accident.
According to Visser, the driver of the car was admitted to the Mediclinic George on Sunday with injuries. The driver, according to a reliable source, Sidney Berry, was at the scene of the accident when emergency services arrived after apparently leaving the scene of the accident to call his parents.
• The funeral service for Marilize will take place on Tuesday at 13:00 in the NG Church Welgeluk in Oudtshoorn.
