THE body of Marilize Nortier, 18, matriculator of Langenhoven Gymnasium in Oudtshoorn, was found only hours after she died in the wreckage of a BMW in a canal along the Kango Grotte road outside town on Saturday.
Although the accident was reported to have occurred between 03:00 and 04:00 on Sunday morning, the Oudtshoorn Emergency Services were called to the scene only after 07:42 - about 10 km outside Oudtshoorn - after farm workers saw the car where it was on his passenger side at the bottom of the canal was full of water.

When the car was pulled out of the water, Marilize was still strapped into the front passenger seat.
Captain Louis Visser, spokesman for the Oudtshoorn Police, said the cause of the accident is still unknown. Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide.

Visser said there is no final result yet on the cause of Marilize's death. It is not yet known whether she died or was drowning due to the accident.
According to Visser, the driver of the car was admitted to the Mediclinic George on Sunday with injuries. The driver, according to a reliable source, Sidney Berry, was at the scene of the accident when emergency services arrived after apparently leaving the scene of the accident to call his parents.

• The funeral service for Marilize will take place on Tuesday at 13:00 in the NG Church Welgeluk in Oudtshoorn.

My fok... If she was alive and the driver left the scene are there grounds to charge him with culpable homicide or murder?

Even if she were dead when he left, there are still grounds. He was driving and she is dead

Looking at that car, it's possible that he had a severe concussion which will totally mess up your mind and thought processes, so to me it's not really that strange that he left the scene.

Fair point... I suppose that would be culpable homicide... Leaving her to drown would possibly be murder... One can hope they find the fscker.

Balls... I've had a pretty severe accident that put a mate in hospital (thankfully minor) and I had a concussion.... My first thought was to make sure everyone involved was OK and to get medical services and the police on scene... Not to leave the accident

Uh the severity of a concussion can vary greatly. Some can knock you out completely while others can leave you totally dazed and confused and even temporarily wipe your memory. Memory loss after such an accident is very common. You can be knocked out and when you wake up you don't know where you are etc.

Besides, it doesn't look like the driver tried to flee because he was there at the scene when paramedics arrived. The people who picked him up said he was totally confused according to the article.

What do mean by finding him. He stayed at the scene and was taken to hospital.

If that is how the car was found then it doesn't look like drowning could be a possibility.

If you're not carrying a phone or it has been damaged/lost during the accident then you'd have to leave the scene to get help unless there happened to be traffic passing by.
