Maps app for iOS powered by TomTom, company remains mum on SA

My mate in Aus says that there are no 3D maps or business listings for SA. I really hope that changes come release of iOS 6...

this move will likely kill off Garmin completely now.

they will be reduced to an outdoor and activity GPS manufacturer now.

Garmin is a better GPS. Used in planes and ships etc.

However i personally have a tomtom for its ease of use.

Never seent eh point of my phone having a GPS>

SA is covered.

I'll have to see if I am allowed to post screenshots 1st.... but we are on the map so to speak :)

No 3D, but you can nav/search street addresses and we have satelite view + street view.

Till I get a takedown you can see some pics of my neighborhood over here

I thought it was "built from the ground up".

Maps for Cape Town seem perfect to me. In fact, it has a road on it that Google Maps was missing, which is nice

Bah. Thats part of the reason I dislike open source stuff in my old age.
Don't want to fix stuff myself that is broken. I'd rather pay for stuff and expect it to work :)

Its not based on open source, Google used the same source files Apple did, http://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/licensing/our-partners/

Its called reporting a problem when the real world dont match the data. How else do you think they update maps all the time?

Or do you think TomTom/Google/Microsoft/Nokia literally have people in every country that just drive around looking for new roads being build 24/7?

Edit: If you want an open source selution go look at Open Street maps, oh yeay the same Open Source that Apple used to geo tag the photo's by the way.

Wow! That would be real nice to have even if it just for the 4 or so major cities here.

Did you see Google's announcement last week, they are doing the same?

Now just for Nokia Drive/Microsoft to show us there solution.

I've got the beta on my iPad and it seems the major cities are included in terms of street names but I live in Vanderbijlpark and only the biggest road names are included. Also any attempt to get directions fail and point of interest data is pretty much completely missing from what I can see. Surely Tom Tom have all this data so just hope Apple incorporates it all ASAP!

No I didn't see the announcement. Are they doing it for SA?

That is the plan.

Short add

Full press announcement can be see in this link. The 1st part is just history, the 3d mapping section starts at 37:40 I think

I have nothing against open source software per se. I used to be an open source contributor.
And I am fully aware that Apple uses OSM.

What I dislike is the "Oh but you can fix it yourself" open source mentality. I don't want to fix it. I want to pay and for it to just work.

And TomTom most certainly hire people to do their mapping. In fact, they are hiring for someone to go and map Haiti for $15000 :)

Mapping education 101 http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/46085/how-tomtom-maps-are-made
They use base maps
Employees add and fix on base
Device data gets added but can only go so far, they also need human(users) input in case of errors.

Dont worry I get it, you the type that go F it, someone else can report the problem, I'll just continue moaning about it till the end of time.
