Mars One is the first realistic project I’ve ever encountered for gradual colonization of Mars. It has already gathered support among scientists and is searching for sponsors and… the first person to land on the red planet.

There is already an established plan for the preparation and astronaut training. The first humans to settle on Mars will arrive in 2023, with the launch scheduled for September 14, 2022.

The roadmap seems quite simple:

2013 – The astronaut selection begins. A total of 40 people will be chosen to live and train in a replica of the Martian settlement.
2014 – This is where the preparation for sending the first batch of supplies and communication satellite begins.
2016 – In January the supplies, 2500 kg of food and the satellite will be send to Mars.
2018 – A rover will land on Mars. It will choose the best location for the settlement and will stream live video to Earth available for anyone to watch.
2021 – All supplies for the settlement will have landed on Mars plus a second rover.
2022 – All the machinery needed for water, oxygen and atmosphere production will be ready. The first manned flight to Mars launches on September 14. Four people will take the one-way trip to the red planet.
2023 – The first people will land on Mars and start working on the settlement. Two years later the next colonizers will arrive, bringing new modules, rover and hardware.

Those of us that are to remain on the Earth, will be able to see the whole process live via video streaming.

So, the Mars One project might turn out the next big leap for the mankind. You can visit the official website for more information. There you can learn for the first Ambassadors of Mars, plans, roadmap, contact info, etc.

The one thing that bothers me is who will build the space ships or shuttles that will make all of those one-way trips. Also 10 years seems like an awfully short period for fund-raising and building all of those expensive vessels? I guess only time will tell.

As a huge fan of sci-fi, I’ve always dreamed to see humans explore space and land on other planets. I really hope the Mars One project finds the money and staff to become reality. It is about time, don’t you think? And if you don’t want to live on this planet anymore, now is the time to convince your spouse and apply for the one-way trip to Mars. Convinced? Send applications this way.

I would think they would have to undergo extensive psychiatric testing to make sure they can live there ;)

EDIT: Sunshine (movie) just came to my mind...

K where can I sign up?
Can I pack my bags already?

I would so go spend the rest of my life on Mars but would need 3 conditions to be met.
1: Unlimited access to media like games, movies, music, TV and so on.
2: Uncapped Internet access, I know it will have in no way the same speed as earthbound but I need to be able to download whatever I want as well as be able to communicate uncensored.
3: Need new/latest hardware every 2 years.

Yeah this is a scam...

I have a feeling you are right esp the way the word things, but as I said if there ever was such a project I would sign up no problem.

Nevermind that the team that is being show cased consists of a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a lady in advertising and a guy that specialises in land based telescopes and has done a small experiment with Nasa. Governments dont even have the ability to house people permanently on the moon which is a three day trip how can you possibly do this on mars a 7 month trip? The groups funding will come from marketing through the media and they plan to choose astronauts in a game show type way. Apparently the public will get to big brother them and vote :D , its just so laughable can anyone say Kony 2012?

I think they forgot:
2026 - Americans arrive.
2028 - One of only two discovered water sources turns out to be a dud.
March 2028 - Tensions start rising.
April 2028 - Civil war erupts.
:D

In 3.5years they are supposed to launch 2.5t hardware to Mars. The problem is, they don't have a cent in their pockets. A mission like this cost upwards of $ 1exp12 ! ! ! That was the money the US spend in a year at the hight of the cold war when 'times were good'. Now . . .

I don't see how terraforming another planet will work when we can't even accurately predict the weather on our planet

Maybe it's just me, but I don't trust people who can't even handle English grammar, to design, build and fly a very delicate, complicated thing like a spaceship, which is basically just a tiny capsule on a huge pile of highly explosive material. I'm guessing they have similar math skills, being unable to work out what this adventure will cost. It's not exactly something you can get going through Kickstarter.

Also: Western capitalist pig-dog imitators are way too late. Glorious Mother Russia already had a Mars 1 mission. It did not end well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_1
