“If the DA is going to be taken over by right-wing elements, I am out of there.” Masango asked Mashaba if he would consider joining the Economic Freedom Fighters, and stressed that the mayor didn’t deny that he could leave the DA.
“If the DA is taken over by the Institute of Race Relations, I would not want to be associated with such an organisation.”

You are a damned disgrace of a racist and should leave immediately!

Oh wait, even better, stay where you are and let your party collapse. This will eventually be the end of the DA, no matter who takes it over.

Is it just me or has the IRR becomes very assertive in the last few years? They always used to be there, but they have moved from a board room think tank to an organisation that is far more in the every day news. I suspect that their strategy is paying off.

What surprises me however is that Mashaba came from the FMF, an organisation that is more liberal than the IRR. I wonder if he is really sincere in his anti immigrant rhetoric.

 you are delusional if you think the DA will win Joburg in 2021, they are doing terrible in the latest by-elections.

Identity politics is just no working for them.
They never won Joburg before, they just got enough votes to form a coalition government, I think what he is talking about is them being in more or less the same position.

You do realize that identity politics or not come 2021 DA will still be up there and Freedom Front will still be down there? Even if they drop close to where they were before Maimane came along they will still be one of the bigger opposition parties.

The IRR is just a DA faction. Look at Zille for example, DA-->IRR-->DA

The DA is in control of Joburg, I would call that a win. They will not be in control after 2012 if they do not change cause very quickly.

They do serve at the mercy of the Fighters. I think the IRR and Zille faction has decided it does not matter if they lose JHB and Tshwane, they have their power base in WC and that is all that matters, losing JHB would leave Maimane with nothing and that is exactly what they want.

The fact that the DA has not called out those apartheid relics in the IRR speaks volumes. Now Mashaba, probably the only man with balls in the DA, must just leave the sinking ship, history will judge him harshly if he does not. The party is over!

I think in some ways you're getting towards the core of it but possibly ascribing it incorrectly. The Da have attempted to do a similar thing in jhb and tshwane as they did in CT... But they had to get in bed with parties that don't even vaguely align at all and its probably more of a negative for the party as a whole than the positives of having the areas under their control. It would possibly be more beneficial in the long run for the da to withdraw back into the WC and focus on good governance etc like they proclaim to do... Then take a swing at jhb and tshwane etc at a later date when they don't have to compromise by getting into bed with corrupt parties like the eff.

Mashaba is a very popular leader based on what he's doing in Joburg, even among non-DA supporters. There will be a major decline in the city and the province for the DA if he leaves.

You agree with notion that their alliance with the EFF is doing them more harm than good?

DA is at a crossroads, either way, whatever they do - there will be consequences.
