South Africa: 15 dead after gunmen open fire at bar in Soweto township

Gunmen used automatic rifles and powerful handguns to kill 15 people and injure a further eight in a mass shooting at a tavern in Johannesburg’s Soweto township in the early hours of Sunday.

The attack on the Orlando East bar in the Nomzamo informal settlement occurred shortly after midnight when a group of men arrived in a Toyota minibus and entered the bar, neighbours told the Guardian.

Police said victims had been shot “at random” while they were drinking, contradicting early reports that they had been targeted specifically. Such shootings are often linked to gangland vendettas or turf battles.

South Africa has mass shooting, more than anywhere else in the world. Government definitions here are designed to not classify any shooting as a mass shooting - no matter how many people are shot and wounded or shot and killed.

So every US mass shooting deserves their thread despite being more often than local mass shooting and not local ones?

South Africa bar shootings: four killed in KwaZulu-Natal on same night as 15 die in Soweto

Four people have been killed and eight wounded in a bar in eastern South Africa after two men fired indiscriminately at customers, police said, on the same night as a bar shooting in Soweto left 15 dead.

Police were trying to verify if the attacks were linked, they said, noting their similarity.

In the city of Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal province on Saturday night, two entered the bar and “fired random shots at the patrons” before fleeing, local police spokesman Nqobile Gwala said.

That's the first thought when I heard about it, I also suspect that it could be the same thing with the Free State shooting.

We really need to close the borders if we are going to stand a chance in fighting crime, until then it's a losing battle.

Two killed, four wounded, in another tavern shooting in Katlehong

Two people were killed, and four others were wounded in another tavern shooting in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni, at the weekend.

"It is reported that four men, of which one of them was armed with a 9mm pistol, entered the tavern and started shooting randomly at patrons," Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello said.

Sello said two people died on the scene, and four others were transported to hospital in the Friday incident.

Why are you reposting articles that already appear elsewhere? Is it because of the noodles?
The CIT articles have their own thread right? But are also posted elsewhere? This is an articles/discussion thread for the overall thing.

I am all for a thread like this. Mass shootings in SA are rife. Problem is that the Media are not keen on reporting on all of them. SAPS and Government are not keen on making stats publicly either as it tarnishes the country's reputation. But, while we get to see one in every 5,000 mass shootings reported in the media in SA, we should discuss these in a single thread. Mass shootings are more here in SA than anywhere else in the world.
