Massive MTN price hikes: how much extra you will pay

R35 -> R40 isn't 29%

Thanks for pointing that out. Been corrected.

A quick explanation for those who care about how this happened. The MTN press release says R45, but the website says R40. I performed my calculations on the press release price and transcribed them into the column that says X% increase/decrease.

I then received feedback from MTN saying that the R40 price was accurate and changed my spreadsheet, but forgot to transcribe the new percentage.

Thanks for pointing it out!

No-one else thinks that a monthly 1GB data bundle for R160 is obscene (never mind R25 for 50MB). Cellular providers are easily making 80% pure profit on data alone (considering that whole-sale international bandwidth goes for less than R1/GB and with peering-agreements in place, local data should actually be zero rated).

If I read this correctly I have an Anytime 100 Topup at R99pm, will this then be R109pm and I will get R110 airtime value? I never use the measly 100MB data I get with it.

When this contract expires I will not renew it MTN... sucks for you.

If you are on MTN there is on need to use their data, the AH/Axxess pricing is much better.

WTF MTN increasing prepaid bundles too. I mean they just launched some of those bundles anyways.....

It must also be said which the article fails to mention that MTN is STILL running the Data Giveback promo which gives 100% or 50% extra data for each bundle purchase.

So the chart can be slightly misleading if one would to compare the prices of say a 1GB Vodacom prepaid bundle valid for 30 for R149 compared to the new MTN prices where 1GB for 60days is R160 but also includes a extra 1GB of data valid for 30days....

Valid point. But just because MTN only asks you to bend over while Vodacom forces you to wear the gimp suit as well doesn't make MTN the good guy in all this.

WTF indeed.
AFAIK, MTN recently changed the extra 1GB to "Night Express 1GB", so basically you get nothing extra.

Wonder what happens to my contract.. e.g.
Anytime 200, Current R450.. Article R525 - Change: R75
2GB/Month, Current R99.. Article R260 - Change: 160 (Thankfully i did not renew this lapsed contract)

WTF!! I seriously think if one side of the contract changes costing it should allow the contract to be terminated. Hrm I should push a complaint thru to CPA? and see what happens as consumers can't be held liable to a change in cost. Wouldn't they be required to redo financing calculations to 'see' if you qualify technically? I mean i could be ok for the original value and not for the new which would place liability on MTN for not following due procedure when handing out credit ;)

Not at all.... I'm super pissed to be honest. Cellc started it all with their increase. They started the price war in lowering prices and everyone followed and then when they increased everyone is following too....

Prices are supposed to come down as technology gets better like fibre backbones more consumers to turn a profit ect ect but in SA everything goes up except the salary and when people strike business cry saying no this is killing the economy..... These price increases are killing the economy.....

Just checked the Give Back promo is still valid and still gives Anytime data for 30days ;)

From my experience over the last year MTN has had the worst network in Joburg. The price increase will just push more customers away.

Where too? Telkom Mobile is the ONLY provider that did not increase prices. Virgin Mobile too but their prices hardly offer any value for money anyways.

According to the T&Cs on MTNs site the Data Giveback promo is ending on 30 April.
