The minister says overcrowding in prisons will remain a reality for a while as the number of awaiting trial detainees continues to increase.
Overcrowding in South African prisons will remain a reality for a while as the number of awaiting trial detainees continues to increase in provinces such as the Western Cape, where there has been significant growth in the number of people arrested for violent crimes, Correctional Services Minister Michael Masutha said on Thursday.

“As of April 2018 this year, correctional services had 163 140 inmates in its 243 correctional facilities, comprising of 45 294 remand detainees and 117 820 sentenced offenders. This is way above the 119 000 bed capacity that we currently have,” Masutha told journalists at a briefing ahead of his budget vote speech in Parliament.

don't worry, death penalty will make half of those prisons empty. :)

Just release everyone... we'll then have plenty of space from the hardened vicious criminals that walk around offending and hurting peoples feelie weelies. SA will then finally have peace

The ANC will use the death penalty as an instrument of terror if it was legal.
This x1000

The ANC has been wiping it's backside with the constitution in every possible way; to give them the power to decide who lives and dies would be very very unwise.

the US has this exact same problem, maybe we should adopt some of their rules?

Maybe we should stop putting people in jail for bad words or using force to protect themselves and loved ones, so scaring some one or the host of other soft easy targets the justice dept goes after and focus on real criminals like rapists, murders and CIT robbers.

yeah, or reopen robben island :D:D

or outfit a supertanker as a prison and prevent people escaping by constantly moving around the world.
Nah, just park it in the Arctic or close to Antarctica... or in seas with lots of sharkies :D

One thing though - they'll have to gut the engine room. No good in having it getting repaired by the inmates and then start sailing like a big Jolly Roger all over....

How many reasons...

It's in the Constitution and there will never be enough votes to change that.

Because we don't want to become a pariah state again.

Because it's not a deterrent.

But mainly because the numbers are so huge, if I recall we would be executing around 60 people a month just for murder.
That would me more than Iraq and Saudi Arabia.
