Matric results a fraud: experts

Educational experts advise that people should not pay any attention to the matric pass rate which was unveiled today, and that poor mathematics education is hurting IT industry

In a comparison between the matric mathematics papers of 1985, 1993, 2008 and 2012, experts said that the 1985 and 1993 papers were significantly harder than the 2008 and 2012 papers.

1988 matric maths paper was definitely the hardest !! :whistling:

We have been saying this to our kids too. When my wife and I were at school, exams were a lot harder than now.
Back in the day it was unheard of to study the day before for a final exam (or any exam), yet our kids are doing it and doing well. WTF! They are cruising through school.

Oh did you also have to write 88, 89, 90 and 91? :whistling:

Yeah... 78.2%..... the chance of that being accurate is... wait for it.... 0%.

Would love to see an independent comparison of the maths and science papers with ieb and /or international bodies, as well as marking standard and pass marks

More from Sapa:

The 2013 matric pass rate is 78.2 percent, Education Minister Angie Motshekga said in Johannesburg on Monday.

"The standard of our question papers has improved significantly and is comparable to most international bodies," she said.

In 2009, when Motshekga took over as minister, the pass rate was 60.6 percent. It has climbed steadily since then.

A total of 30.6 percent of matrics obtained bachelor's passes.

There were a total of 562,112 full-time pupils.

Every province, except the Northern Cape, improved its pass rate compared to 2012.

The Free State was the top performing province, increasing its pass rate from 81.1 percent in 2012 to 87.4 in 2013.

The results for the other provinces, for 2012 and 2013, were as follows:

Western Cape: 82.8 percent and 85.1 percent,

Eastern Cape: 61.4 percent and 64.9 percent,

Limpopo: 66.9 percent and 71.8 percent. It had a 48 percent pass rate in 2009.

Northern Cape: 74.6 percent and 74.5 percent,

KwaZulu-Natal: 73.1 percent and 77.4 percent,

Mpumalanga: 70 percent and 77.6 percent,

Gauteng: 83.9 percent and 87 percent,

North West: 79.5 percent and 87.2 percent.

Even IEB is easier than that of old. You can get the papers and compare for yourself. Which is a huge advantage for their students of course

I don't really look at how we pass...my real question is, how many of these learners who pass with Bachelor Pass will get into university.

Agree with that, wrote the 2013 papers and they were hardly any 'difficult Questions' (Mathematics mainly) that really stretched the thinking levels of many of us. Maximum 4 Qs out of both papers I found difficult. The fact that out country decided to water down our syllabus and expect us to compete with others with much greater knowledge, really irks me.

We do tend to breed them rather thick these days though. Jackass, The Kardashians and Paris Hilton hardly inspire the youth of today in the right direction...

Damn Verwoerd, still making the maths hard from beyond the grave, is he? Bladdy agent.

imho the required rate to pass a subject should be 70% and not 30%. Its a joke to pass a subject with just remembering 30% of it.
