Aggg, Mbeki will slate it as racist or something, esp since its coming from the DA and he'll say Ivy *spit* has been doing a great job.

I read an article in The Mercury today about her trumpeting her successes today, made me sick tbh..

It can indeed be disheartening. I sometimes think that they are convinced that saying something is enough: no measurement of actual performance or change.

Thats the worrying thing...

I know its becoming somewhat of a joke in this country, but we love setting up committees or working-groups that make recommendations to get buried on someones desk...

I am of the honest opinion a regulator that was independent from the DoC and that had decent skills would be able to sort Telkom out in a surprisingly short period of time, but for every second that Ivy has her hand in the pot we sleep further and further behind.. :(

Just on a complete side-note....

Its part of the reason I'm leaving the job I'm currently in. I've had enough of seeing what the internet is capable of given the right infrastructure but being hamstrung by not being able to implement it in this country due to the ridiculous costs involved...

I get the impression that the only way to get rid of the Grim Poisonous Ivyness Creep, would be a court case brought against her and her plants and doff Alec, by NeeTel etc - there must be quite a bit of lost revenue per day accumulating - not that NeeTel has displayed much competence in its own back yard, but not having the promised national network of its own to operate does make it rather difficult to promise any kind of 'affordable' service...

What is also interesting is that Mbeki didn't say that NeeTel must get a move-on, instead he pointed his finger at !CASA...

i suspect that when she was editor(?) of cosmo/fair lady/whatever she had very little idea what let alone where the mark was

but i have seen her in action in the portfolio committee and have been repeatedly impressed by her grip on the big picture as well as the detail

Not trying to be funny here but for those that know, what would you say are ICASA`s achievments in the last 7 years?.
@Dominic, what is Ivys agenda though? With her big picture and detailed view what does she want to see in the next couple of years? Im guessing market liberalization and competition but I see no real signs of advancing in that direction?

i think that the article do the rounds by Profs Horwitz and Currie pretty much covers why ICASA is as it is - have you had a chance to read it? well worth it and pm if you want a copy

as to Ivy's agenda - very very difficult to determine any logical intent but certainly i would imagine
- @ certain stages to protect the value of telkom
- the conclusion that she is intent on delaying "managed liverisation" [ooops - wrong Minister] is unavoidable
- continued government control over communications in the sense that control of comms is more and more a cornerstone of control over the country and people
- lip service is continually paid to underserviced area provision but there has been nothing to show that this is actually a concern for thatsleepy-cassawari

@ the end of the day i am hesitant to use a word like agenda because it implies competence and having a plan

It would be interesting to actually read an analysis with say tables/graphs of when things were promised and when they were actually implemented - sort of timeline. E.g. in 1995/6 the SNO were promised to be operational by 2001/2, but only becoming operational in 2006/7; ADSL regulations in effect in 2006, but Telkom et al not yet abiding by the law, etc. It shold be done across the whole sector, i.e. not just govt but Neotel, Goal, MTN, Vodacom, iBurst, etc. It would provide a factual basis from which to critisize companies actions and try to interpret any new promises, such as Infraco becoming operational and reducing prices, LLU, etc.

If the research is too much for one person (given time constraints) maybe a wiki type entry would do and make it an ongoing research project.

Oupoot, great idea- something like this is in the works (an information portal), with some substantial funding behind it.
