Driver's licence card five-year expiry date will be extended

The Department of Transport is planning to take a proposal to the cabinet to have the validity period of driver's licence cards in South Africa extended from five to eight years.

That was revealed in a recent interview with transport minister Fikile Mbalula on eNCA's Power to Truth with JJ Tabane.

Not enough. The whole system should be scrapped in total. It should never be allowed to offer an income stream for government. They are not capable of printing cards and issuing it. Not today and also not in 100 years. Scrap the system and take it back to what it was before the ANC took over.
 
WTF not just make it 10 years. 8 off all numbers, the idiot chose 8.

I was also hoping for 10 years, but i guess this is an improvement

The last 2 fingers are reserved for counting the kickback money on.

Mbalula previously defended the policy, claiming it was necessary because the material from which the licence cards were manufactured initially was believed to only last that long.

I still have my original license card from 22 years ago, and it is in perfect condition despite being used as a scraping tool and sitting in my toolbox among all the heavy tools bashing it about.

Logically it cannot apply to current cards. It was a dumb question. The current card has an expiry date after which it will no longer be valid. So, one can safely assume it will only start on your next renewal.
 
Why not 6, 6.25 or 6.75 or 7.5 years or 7.85 bla bla useless
 
While not ideal. This is great! ****ing hate having to go and renew my drivers. So this will be a slight betterment to the whole thing.
 
Would this be of effect only for renewal or current licenses too?
 
The minister denied there was a backlog in licence printing due to the breakdown, despite comments from Kgosiemang to the contrary.

Can ministers not be held accountable for such blatant lies?

Anyway, "let's lower demand for a mandated production because we're to useless to do our jobs properly" is what it is. Very similar to Eskom. Not complaining in this instance though
