All the morons do is always just talk... never do anything.

How about they just go ahead and set the fixed costs for telkom.

I give up...

yeah, in the near future I can see some severe competition South African style:

Telkom - ADSL 30Gb R2000.00
New Guys - ADSL 30Gb R1999.99
We - "wow"

Ok, a few things here.

1. 30Gbs from Telkom? Too forward thinking for them...
2. R2000.00 for said 30GB? Price is too low - way too low - for Telkom's shareholders.

Going back to the topic at hand, I saw the news last night with Thabo, and it was quite heartening to hear what was said.

Fixed? Rather create a true, open market, and let the price-wars begin!

If Mbeki truly wanted competition to Telkom, he would have the law changed to remove the state imposed monopoly. Mbeki is in the situation that businesses are bypassing South Africa to invest in countries that are not run Banana Republic style. In other words, Mbeki is losing out on future revenue to pad his Swiss accounts. Big Business in South Africa already have a foot out the door, just in case. So where will Mbeki get his cash flows? Who knows. But his idea of redress is to state that the situation in South Africa is changing in the hope that some fish will bite. His problem is that his government practices statist policies and is reluctant to give up their control. The situation in South Africa will never improve so long as maximising power is the core of government policy.

You misunderstand what Mbeki meant - he said he wants some competition - he means like raffle tickets, or draws for a new car, free beauty makeovers - that sort of thing..

ROTFLMAO !!! :)

<Q>"In South Africa you pay more than 25c for a line. In India 5c for the same service. The second network operator will help to reduce costs.</Q>

Sheesh - howz about quoting more than 900c for a freaking line, like the rest of SA ?
Showz you how much he wants people to think a line in SA costs, where's his reality pill ?

I think you hit the nail on the head. This has obviously been the problem all along. When Ivy talks about competion for Telkom we dorks thinks she's taking about market competition. She also got her MBA at the Peoples Republic of Soviet Business Schools, and there they never had any definition for a concept such as markets. So in her mind competion is like Pop Idols. Yea this is it. This is why there has been no movement in that direction over the past zillion years.
