Got a bit peeved off about this article, Mbeki should focus a bit more on a 'war against crime' on the home front. Very nice to talk about problems that other countries are facing but he doesn't have the courage to face the crisis on home soil.

I'm sick of Mbeki saying all the right things to the international community but showing very little empathy for the people he is supposedly serving. If tourists say they won't come here because of crime then he hops around.

Mbeki is an amazing International Diplomat... and that fact should never be forgotten, but as a President, i'd say he is a dismal failure. We have a totally incompetent cabinet that HE installed. We have incredibly high levels of crime and corruption... Almost everything within the borders of our own country almost seems to be on the verge of collapsing in on itself, but he keeps globetrotting. What he needs to do is tell the world to sod off while he fixes his own burning house, he'd earn 100x more respect from his own people as well as from the international community.

But then as is standard in this country, thats hard work and a VERY long term goal, and nobody with any power in this country seems to be able to look at long terms benefits.

I think that overseas problems are so much easier to address because they're not his problem. Our problems are tough. How do you discipline a cabinet that is made up of your comrades that in the old days you were sworn to protect? The rules need to change because the ANC is no longer a group formed to fight government but they are now the ruling party, the government.
