Hey

How is the signal routed?

Does it go from tower to tower until it reaches a Telkom Type ADSL line then to the local MTN ISP or does each 3g Tower have a direct link to the MTN ISP.

In both 2G and 3G there is no tower to tower relay of the signal using 2G or 3G protocols. The tower is connected directly back to one of MTN's switching centres via Telkom leased lines. These are not ADSL type lines but E1 2Mbit/s lines or multiples of E1 links.

These links may be copper, fibre or microwave based.

From the regional MTN switch, the packet data goes back to the SGSN via MTN's backbone network which this time goes over Telkom high-capacity fibre. The SGSN is connected to the GGSN which is the gateway node to MTN Network Solutions which is a tier 1 ISP and connects MTN to the rest of the world.
