So I'm not into gaming anymore, but my son (14yrs) is. He plays mostly fortnite, run & shoot kind of games.
He wants to buy a new mechanical keyboard, budget more or less R3000 (can maybe be stretched a bit).
He have shown me a few on takealot, 60% size mostly but I would say a 75% is maybe better, can be used for more than gaming?
He's talking about hot swapping keys, is that really needed?
He likes the lighting etc so thats a must.

So can you please help a noob dad out here, my son needs a bit of guidance and I have no idea how to help him.

Thanks!

Why 3k?
Check this out on takealot: Redragon-Tenkeyless Gaming Keyboard With Sparkfox USB-A to Type-C- Cable

I have a Logitech G815 tactile (because I wanted low profile mechanical) and its fine.
I tried a G915 clicky for a while, and liked it a lot more, even though they are supposed to feel very similar.

Some keys on the tactile feel different to others, and I'm not talking about space bar even. The Redragon Yama is actually a pretty nice budget keyboard if you're OK with full height.

Take a look at the Keychron range as well.

This one is hot-swappable , south facing RGB, can connect to other devices as well via bluetooth and you can map the keys using VIA/QMK.

Also have to point out the keycaps that comes with them are not shine through.

I was looking at a Keychron when I was looking to get my new keyboard.
In the end I got lazy and just threw money at a brand I love... Got the Razer BlackWidow V4. I am very happy with it. I previously had the BlackWidow Chroma for about 7 years.

Where is your son's pc. Do you know how much noise these keyboard make?

Also teach your son he does not have to compete with friends. 3K for a keyboard to play Fortnite? Eish What does his pc cost?

Also you can get great deals on Carbonite. I bought a Razer Black widow plus razer mouse and razer headphones for something like R500 a few years ago and all still work perfect.

LMAO, not all mechanical keyboards are noisy, what a stupid comment.
You have kids? That is literally the reason they want mechanical keyboards. Mine went and tested and looked for the one making the most noise. They want their Fortnite friends to hear it over the mic.

Go read your second sentence on your initial post.

I've seen this PLID on Takealot before, whats off-putting is they talk about it being the K8 Pro version, but the one image is the Pro and the other is non-Pro.

I ended up getting my K8 Pro (brown keys) from Geewiz mid-July 2023 - stock sold out in 2-3 days but fortunately I happened to notice it arrive on day 1 or 2. I use it for office work, twice a week on average. So far I only had to charge it twice in 15 months but I suppose Bluetooth is quite efficient in terms of battery drain.

Ah damn I actually see it now you're right! Wonder if it's the vendor itself not uploading the correct pictures.

Not necessarily a recommendation, but I have the Corsair K63 with Cherry MX red + lapboard and couldn’t be happier.

I would imagine gaming with clicky keys would be horrible (not the noise, the feel). But I even prefer linear (if that’s what they are called) for productivity/typing too - I daily a Keychron K10 Pro, and before that a Red Dragon Devajaras
