What infrastructure? We are three years away from the event yet absolutely nothing is finished yet. Not even the upgrade of soccer city ...

this is what is being done to improve the transport infrastructure for 2010 and beyond

The Transport Department has allocated seven billion rand to the "SA Rail Commuters Corporation Metrorail" for their Accellerated Rolling Stock Programme.

SARCC Metrorail will - in the next three years - upgrade the country's rail infrastructure and refurbish one thousand six hundred trains for safer, more comfortable rail services for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

wasn't there suppose to be stadiums built? don't those take at least 1.5 to 2yrs to complete? and must be ready before 2009? So unless they already starting WC2010 is gonna be played on a the other existing stadiums.. or on the open veld. :p

fact is the money is available, the plans are in place, and the work is being done, and there is evidence to back this up, but there is no evidence to back up your allegations - another fine example of the stupidity displayed by some people on this forum - stupidity or jealousy or blindness due to bigotry

There is also evidence to back up that work aint being done. About a month ago on special assignment they showed some of the railways in Cape Town and there are people dying almost everyday just by climbing on those trains. A lot of the people who also go to work reguraly have complained to metro rail without getting an answer.

They hosted a mean cocktail party. :p :D

They do know how to throw a good bash, the two DoC telecoms colloquiums had the best food I've ever had at a large conference ... wonder if I shouldn't get onto this 2010 gravy train  :D

Targets don't mean anything without action. If they can;t even organise a press conference how on earth will they manage the WC. Secondly compare these timeframes to the original timeframes in the bid document and you will see how far behind we really are...

What everybody seem to forget aswell is tha the gautrain is a Massive project the biggest this country has seen in decades..where will the capacity come from to build the stadiums at the same time.

We have a lot of manpower, if it can be convinced to work. What we don't neccessarily have is skilled labour. However, importing lost skills at contract rates would solve this, if it turns out to be a problem.

Logistically this can be done. Whether it *will* is another story entirely. Possibly involving fairies and elves, and a missing pot of gold... not to mention the smear campaign :p

They couldn't start that until January 2007 due to it being used.

The myth about having to be ready 1 year before the contest is just that a myth. Germany wasn't ready a year before either.

Where is the evidence that work is actually being done? - give us webcams that we can watch to make sure the money doesn't disappear into someone's backpocket...

I have driven past a few Gautrain stations recently, they are being built. Check Rosebank, Sandton and Marlboro to see work getting done.

Above all though missing a media conference is a farce and completely unacceptable, The first thing that happens after that is the blood thirsty Aussies jump in to "help". Man I dislike them more all the time.

If we did fail they have already been told they won't get it by Sep Blatter.

The WC can't work on African time.

just to add to gavin's post, the Centurion station is also being built

@telkomsuig - the fact that they did not show up on time for the presser is inexcusable - that's not the point - work is being done - and the country will host a successful World Cup - it just seems that in this country when good work gets done - a certain sector of the population scream that it will not happen because of corruption etc. SA has proven that despite all the cries of corruption before events like RWC 1995 - WSSD - Anti racism confie - Cricket WC - they were all hosted and the country was praised for the sterling organisation

2 years, 10 months. Once again, work has not even started yet.

2 years, 4 months. Yet again, when did the work start?

Obviously you don't work in construction, 'cos if you did, you'd know that a deadline is never ever met. Case in point: the current work on the parking lot @ Johannesburg International Airport V3 was supposed to be completed February this year. It's still being constructed. We're now approaching the end of November - how many construction workers do you think will work through the silly season? But once again, you would believe your Government above and beyond the facts.

Various little problems are now creeping in, notwithstanding things like the impending cement shortage, disruption of traffic in the various cities, oh, and worker unavailability. Check your calendar buddy, it is now under 4 years to 2010, and a fair amount less to 2009, and at this stage money has been budgeted. You have any idea how long it takes a state department to release money to contractors?

Wish them luck, but don't praise when none is due.
