Hi Guys,

SO basically my fiance fell pregnant in late jan early february she was on her moms medical aid until since 1998 but the mom changed companies and as of 1st of march had to change medical aids i do know that all medical aids have a 90 day reinstatement period but now Discovery say they cna reinstate her but she wotn be covered btu then again Discovery didnt know their ass from their elbow by transferring me from dept to dept

anyway i read articles like this and get a glimmer of hope

http://www.all4women.co.za/money/money-matters/medical-aid-what-expectant-moms-need-to-know

but there is no references for that i dont mind having to pay the cash for the hospital and doctor but i think ti would be much easier if medical aid did

so any gurus know what the truth is

If she is moving from one medical aid to another there should be no reinstatement period.

The previous medical aid just won't let go of your funds for I think six months in case of any pending claims.

Not the case with discovery though.

When I got married my wife was on medi-help. She then moved over to my plan and she had a 3 month waiting period.

Firstly, that gave me a headache. Please use sentences and punctuation.

Secondly, it depends on the medical aid entirely. Some will allow you use the benefits immediately, while others will make you wait 3 months. It is completely legal by the way, which I find crazy.

How about explaining properly. When did the previous medical aid end? When is the new one starting? The Medical Schemes Act allows a medical scheme to impose waiting periods if you have been off a medical aid for a certain period. It is to protect the medical aid from people who join only when they need cover. For example you cancelled your medical aid and then 3 months later find out you pregnant and then want to join again.

The previous medical aid ended on the 28th of February and the new one started on the 1st of march and as far as i know that period is 90 days, so this would still be within the 90 day period. I don't mind if they impose a 3 month waiting period before she is covered as that is still way before the due date

huh-uh

read the fine print.

They will not cover pregnancy UNLESS she got preggers AFTER the 3 months.
Beyond the birth they will pay for baby after birth. Not the birth or any possible complication there of.

Can she not join the medical aid she was on before, on her own?

congrats daddy ..

why you no use a condom :p

best is to ask discovery if they can leave her on the medical aid seeing she has been covered before but upgrade her cover and take over payments

they can back date the medical aid and she will be covered

When i switched jobs they did that ...yet i was on discovery medical aid all the time

I suppose the best thing will be to find out from a medical aid lawyer where i stand with this as that article has no references and they dont get back to you at all when i enquire about their information sources
