Fairly obvious mistake in that headline:
'... will cost Eskom us taxpayers R2.5 billion to fix...'

Pay the guy who dropped the extension cord on the unit!
He is a businessman and loyal cadre, excellent at setting up deals, just 1 extension cord for a R2.5 billion repair, he deserves his fair share.

Multiple more than what the entire power plant was supposed to cost, just to fix one broken unit.

This is getting silly.

“Following the power station preliminary investigation, it appears that while performing this activity, air was introduced into the generator at a point where hydrogen was still present in the generator at sufficient quantities to create an explosive mixture, which ignited and resulted in the explosion,” the power utility stated.

“It also appears that there was a deviation from the procedure for carrying out this activity.”

I hope they were fired.

Wait, they were trying to displace Hydrogen with CO2? Wouldn't opening a valve let the H dissipate all on it's own? Surely dumping CO2 over it will just let the CO2 settle underneath the H? How would using CO2 and air show a leakage? Surely a more exotic gas is easier to detect?

Medupi explosion will cost Eskom R2.5 billion and take years to fix

An investigation into the cause of the blast that damaged the Unit 4 generator at the Medupi coal power plant is close to completion, and it will cost R2.5 billion to repair.

This is according to Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter, who added that findings point towards non-compliance by Eskom staff members.
Is it obvious yet? The staff are obviously underqualified and incompetent.
This is the REAL cost of BEE.

Of course it will.
It will take years and years and years and years and years.....
And will go over budget many times....bla bla bla
And then strikes.

And I'm just going to put this here. Not the same as an electrical plant but the concept of budgeting, planning and project time-lines are still the same.
