Megaupload’s 25 petabytes proving costly

Fair enough if they want them to keep the data pay for it.....

But who should?

MU had their assets frozen by the government, so they are unable to continue to pay the hosting company.

The government simply uses a law that says evidence has to be preserved. They have no obligation to pay the costs.

In addition, US criminal law says that you are innocent until a court has judged you guilty. Therefore, right now, legally speaking, MU is innocent of the charges against them. Assume that the host deletes the data. If the court upholds this, they will be innocent after the case as well. But since they could not pay their host, because the government froze their accounts, they will have no business to return to, and will effectively have been shut down by the government, and may even have to face civil litigation from people that used them to store data in good faith they lost due to this. They are screwed either way, in that case.

Yip. It's like renting storage. The storage company will send out the invoice regardless. Same should apply to server hosting of course

Except here, the government took all MU's money, so they cannot pay the bill. So yes, it will get wiped, likely. And MU cannot prevent it, even if they have the money saved up to pay.

Gov should pay, at present MU doesn't really exist, they are no longer trading. If the gov wants the data pay for it to be stored.
